Mojave Paint 1.2 is released (now with Adjustment Layers)

Full contextOriginal content · Reddit

Lots to share from the last month! Mojave Paint is my Mac-first professional image editing software with the credo that "90's software was the best software" and also that "AI can shove it." The app itself now has Adjustment Layers, just the basic six so far (solid fill, gradient fill, curves, levels, brightness/contrast, hue/saturation) for non-destructive adjustments to the layer stack below. See all the release notes on https://mojavepaint.app/release-notes Those release note are on the new website, very much under construction, but it does have the start of a video gallery (thanks to u/MaxGaav for suggesting I keep them on the site instead of linking out to YouTube). https://mojavepaint.app/ That site features an "Interactive roadmap" with easy one-click upvoting on which features you'd like to see next, haven't gotten much traction with that yet so I'd be grateful if anyone goes there and submits a vote. And, 1.2 switches to an In App Purchase model, $9.99 tier to unlock file exporting. The free version has all features except for exporting. I'm a bit opposed to IAP since you don't know up front how much it'll cost, but this does seem like the only way to offer free trials through the App Store, so be it. Next for me: ad compaigns, making marketing materials like lots more videos (I want to reconstruct the WWDC 26 logo in Mojave Paint, in tutorial form, for example). To satisfy the template: Problem: Adobe sucks as a company, GIMP is hideous to look at, I think there's room in the market for another option for image editing. Comparison: Similar products would include Photoshop, Affinity Photo, Acorn, GIMP, Krita. I did a little comparison spreadsheet of the various apps and their shortcuts here, gives you an idea of how similar these product all are. https://mojavepaint.app/shortcuts Pricing: Free to download, includes all features except export. You can save in native .mojavepaint file format, but to export as JPEG, PNG, etc, it's a one time purchase of $9.99.

Nice! Will certainly download and play around with it. What about doing a promo code here? That would give your app some traction I guess. Like an introductionary 50% off for a week or so. On one hand you get less money per purchase, but you'll probably double the sales. And enlarging your user base is what you're after. If possible, you could build something into the app asking people to leave a review on the Mac App Store. Just a small button in the settings for example. You now link to your shortcuts page. But that page doesn't contain a link to the home page. In terms of navigation this is not the smartest thing to do. At least put a link to the home page in the bottom menu. Suggestion: Since you chose for a retro UI, Maybe it's an idea to use a rainbow Apple icon in the download button 😄

Good thoughts, I'll have a real reply later today but I am doing an exclusive sponsorship for the week of June 22nd on sixcolors.com, so that lights a fire under me to fix up that half baked website, including adding navigation.

Pricing economics is an interesting discussion. If you charge vs making it free it makes it seem like it's worth more and more valuable. I could drop the price to $4.99 for a couple days, but bring back to $9.99 before my ad campaign. Think people are that price sensitive?

It's not about price sensitivity. It's about scarcity and about exclusivity. The discount is available for a limited time only and exclusively for readers of this sub (since it's not mentioned elsewhere). I think there is a huge demand for an app like you made, so an image editor that is even simpler than Acorn, at an attractive price, should be able to become very successful. The only downside I can imagine is that it has a retro look, which is not recognizable for most Mac users since most do not know the design before system X. While it's charming, I think you need to put some effort in explaining why it looks like this. So illustrate it with other design from that era I would say. Maybe even the whole design of your website. Hence the suggestion for a rainbow Apple logo. A thing that I personally find confusing is that on one hand it has the looks of Mac System 7/8/9 and on the other hand it is called after Mojave, which was introduced in 2018. Maybe you could give that inconsistency some thought.

Hey, downvoter, if you just downvote without explanation, we learn nothing from you. So arguments please.

Yes! This definitely brings me back. Look forward to all updates.

After use, I gave it 5 stars. For the life of me though, I can't figure out (secondary or right click is not working) on the menu icon bar to change other selections.

Good feedback, you mean cycling through tools in a tool slot, just long press. Or shift with its keyboard shortcut, or I think double tap its keyboard shortcut. Right click would be interesting, in a couple places that hat brings up a context menu (on a layer or a document tab for example) I guess it would make sense to have that on tools as well

That's up to Apple but I'm pretty sure unlimited, you'd just need to be signed in with the same Apple ID.
