Interoperable Apple Photos Alternative?

I'm looking to migrate away from Apple Photos to an app with similar functionality that, ideally, is built on SwiftUI, but has the flexibility of an easy to navigate folder hierarchy, making it interoperable.

I appreciate everyone’s suggestions! I ended up settling on PIXLpath, which combines the interoperability factor I mentioned while still feeling pretty native on macOS.

Nice find. For anyone who wants the same "terminal at this folder" trick without a separate app, macOS has a hidden built-in: System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Services > Files and Folders, enable "New Terminal at Folder", then it shows up in Finder's right-click menu and you can bind a shortcut. Go2Shell is the other classic if you want it as a Finder toolbar button. DTerm still being lighter and frontmost-app aware is a fair reason to keep it around though.

Yeah, I'm a bit confused by that, as Apple Photos supports a folder hierarchy.

It's the fact that it only stores files in a database. I want plain image files on the disk.

Perhaps Nitro? Access to your Photos library and to the file system.

What are your top three priorities and what about them at important to you?

Darkroom, Mylio Photos, Photomator My recommendation: Try Darkroom first since it's free to start and the folder-based workflow is exactly what you described. If you find yourself missing smart albums and facial recognition, layer in Mylio.

I would have suggested XnView earlier, but that’s not built using SwiftUI. It’s just a small powerhouse.

I’d suggest standing by until WWDC next week. They’ve been very quiet about Photomator, I think there’s fair odds of something coming out soon. I think they’ll either have a new version of Photomator or really enhance Photos. If not, you’ve only waited a week and can proceed accordingly.

I’d separate “photo library” from “folder-backed asset library” before you migrate. A lot of Apple Photos alternatives still want to be the owner of the library, which is exactly the part that hurts interoperability later. If you care most about family-photo stuff like memories, face grouping, iCloud-style sync, Immich/PhotoPrism are closer to that world. If you care most about folders, tagging, search, and being able to move files around without feeling trapped, look at DAM-style apps instead. Also test with a copy of 200 photos first, including Live Photos, edited images, and metadata. Migration pain usually hides in those edge cases, not the happy-path JPEGs.
