I found ModernPAR, an Apple Silicon native alternative to MacPAR Deluxe but can't get it to unRAR...

Full contextOriginal content · Reddit

As we know, Apple will be dropping Rosetta 2 soon, so I started looking for an alternative to MacPAR Deluxe and found ModernPAR. However, I can't get it to unRAR anything... In Settings > Post Processing, I see a lock next to the unRAR section. How can I get rid of the lock? Thanks in advance.

The lock is intentional; it doesn’t mean Unrar is disabled. I checked the current source: Built-in Unrar is the pinned *.rar post-processing rule, always kept last and not editable, deletable, or movable. There’s nothing to unlock. For manual extraction, use Cmd-U or drag/open the RAR. After a successful verify/repair it should run automatically; if automatic post-processing is off, use Operation > Apply Rule. If Cmd-U still fails, that’s a separate extraction issue, so the exact error and app version would help narrow it down.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong then... Using Command-U and selecting a PAR2 file does nothing. It only says "Waiting to start" in the lower left corner of the window. BTW, yes, I've already granted fill disk access to the app.

cmd-u is for selecting the archive to extract, not the par2 file. pick the first .rar volume there. for the normal usenet flow, open or drop the .par2 without cmd-u; ModernPAR should verify/repair the set, then the built-in unrar rule can pick up the .rar in that folder. full disk access won't fix selecting the wrong file type. if opening the .par2 normally still sits on waiting to start, grant the enclosing folder when prompted and report that separately as a queue/access bug.

Command-U and selecting the RAR file results in the following. Again, I've already granted full disk access to ModernPAR and, in this instance, I've given "everyone" "Read & Write" privileges to the archive's folder. With the old MacPAR Deluxe, if I double clicked on a PAR/PAR2 file, it would check and (if necessary) repair the archive and, when done, go straight to extracting the RAR. If I double clicked on the RAR, it would just start extracting. So far, ModernPAR has been unable to do either for me.

the screenshot narrows it down: ModernPAR did open the RAR, but its own status says "Folder access not granted." Full Disk Access and Finder read/write permissions are separate from the folder grant a sandboxed app needs. try opening the .par2 first, then grant/select the enclosing archive folder if macOS prompts. if no folder picker appears, i'd file this screenshot as a ModernPAR bug - Cmd-U is getting access to the selected RAR but not its parent folder, so changing chmod or Full Disk Access won't clear that state.

maybe i'm noob but what problem does this solve? I've never had a broken archive file ever. geniunely curious when I'd need this vs. the build in unzip for most things

I've come across many archives that need repairing from usenet.

If that’s the source, SABnzbd allows you to download from Usenet, and has built-in PAR2 repair.
