[Giveaway] OpenVox 2.0 is out - Local AI voice generation on Mac, now with Supertonic 3, better cloning, M4B audiobooks, and Local API
Hey everyone, I posted OpenVox here about a month ago when it was around v1.6.4. Since then, I’ve shipped quite a lot based on feedback from this subreddit, and OpenVox is now at v2.0.0. First, thank you. A lot of the improvements came directly from people here who tried the app, reported bugs, asked for better audiobook support, wanted faster models, requested API/automation use cases, and pointed out rough edges I honestly would not have prioritized this quickly on my own. For anyone seeing it for the first time: OpenVox started as a Mac app and is now also available on iPad and Windows, but this post is mainly about the Mac version. It is a local AI voice app for text-to-speech, voice cloning, audiobooks, multi-speaker conversations, voice changing, and Local API workflows. The main idea: No monthly credits. No cloud upload for generation. No subscription. Runs locally on Apple Silicon. Since my last r/macapps post, the biggest updates are: OpenVox 2.0 Added Supertonic 3 with support for 31 languages Much faster long-form generation. On my M4 Mac, around 4,800 characters took 22.9s with Supertonic 3 vs 38.4s with Kokoro Added Pocket TTS for fast low-latency generation, audiobooks, conversations, and Local API workflows Improved Voice Clone with waveform trimming, zoom, preview, drag handles, and better quality checks Added Local API playback, so scripts/agents can generate speech and play it directly in OpenVox Improved audiobooks with cover artwork, better M4A/M4B export, better chapters, and more reliable long exports Expanded Conversations from 4 speakers to up to 16 speakers Added reusable parameter presets, pause tags like <500ms> and <1s>, default language/voice selection, portable voice backup, easier Settings access, and many crash fixes Current model lineup includes: Supertonic 3 — fast multilingual TTS, 31 languages Pocket TTS — fast low-latency model, good for agents and long-form use Kokoro — fast and stable for long-form generation OmniVoice — expressive multilingual model with 600+ language coverage Qwen3 TTS — high-quality voice cloning and voice design Chatterbox Turbo & Multilingual — expressive / character-style voices Comparison: I’d compare it with Voicebox and Murmur TTS. Voicebox is a strong open-source/cross-platform voice lab, but OpenVox Mac version is Mac-native and includes a bundled voice library, audiobook workflows, voice cloning, voice design, voice conversion, history, export, and Local API in one app. Murmur TTS is good for local narration and has a large voice library, but OpenVox is priced lower and is broader as a complete local voice studio with audiobooks, API workflows, 300+ voices, and 600+ language coverage through OmniVoice. This app is really feature-rich. I bought it a few weeks ago and have no complaints. The developer is responsive and the app gets updated regularly. The best feature is a local API which can allow you use the tts models with your own AI agents .

Really wanted to try this. Reads exciting! Then found out it's only for Silicon :( I'm one of the rare few still on Mac Intel... Nonetheless, sounds like an amazing app! When the time comes and I can afford a new Mac (dang those price increases *sigh*)...I'll be sure to try it out mate. Till then, all the best and up the awesome work!!
Hey I totally sympathize but for that I would need an intel mac to develop and test but let me see what I can do in future to improve the compatibility of the app.
Congrats on the 2.0 release, looks like a serious update. Quick question and a feature request rolled into one. Right now I use Speechify on desktop for one specific thing: I highlight text in any app, hit a keyboard shortcut, and it reads the selection out loud. Then I've got two more hotkeys to speed the voice up or slow it down while it's playing. That's my whole workflow. I'm not creating audio files, I just want to listen to whatever's on my screen, hands-free. From what I can tell, OpenVox is built more for generating and exporting audio rather than this kind of instant select-and-listen flow. Am I reading that right, or is there a way to do the global "read my highlighted text" thing in 2.0? If you ever added a system-wide shortcut that reads selected text from any app, plus hotkeys to adjust speed on the fly, I'd switch over in a heartbeat. The privacy-first local angle and one-time price are exactly what I want, I just need that quick listening loop. Pair that with the natural-sounding voices people are praising here and it'd be an easy buy for me. Either way, nice work on the app. 👍🏻
Thanks for the feedback. A read-aloud feature is definitely on my roadmap. I am currently deciding whether it makes more sense to add it directly inside OpenVox or build it as a separate, more focused app.

Superb! Congratz to the 2.0 release! Would love to give the Mac version a test ride after having played with OpenVox on iPad (Mac would be my go-to platform for daily usage). Btw: Would especially test for voice cloning and audiobooks.
Would love to try this especially the voice cloning. Would be amazing to help doing voiceovers for me who struggles with mic recordings!! Also curious for a M3 air, which model would you recommend before I download them all and get overwhelmed with how much this app does!

Congrats on v2.0! I’ve been a Mac user for years, but only recently started building a local-first macOS app myself. Funny thing is, once I started building one, I began noticing how many great local-first Mac apps are already out there. OpenVox looks really cool. I especially like the local generation / no subscription direction, and the public roadmap is a nice touch too. It actually made me think I should add one for my own app. Nice work, and good luck with the next releases.

This is indeed a huge update, the onboarding wizard is really helpful to understand how to navigate your software. I like the ability to change the voice and clone the voice. My quick feedback is that the 12 seconds of recording my own voice for what is required to read is a little bit too long to read. It took me a few tries to speak it within less than 12 seconds. Also, if you can, please share: how do we leverage that local API endpoint? That would be really great, because it looks like it will unlock many use cases

Nice! API can now be triggered to start on load! Was using Keyboard Maesto for that Now if would could do a menu bar instead of a dock icon id be golden… Runs pretty flawlessly even on my Neo with its 8gb of ram too. Keep up the amazing work…pocket tts has been awesome
This is amazing and I have been looking for something just like it! I spend a lot of time in the car and want to listen to scholarly journal articles for school. I just threw a PDF at OpenVox and it knocked it out of the park!
