Sorry if the title is kinda convoluted, but I am just switching over from WooCommerce to Shopify and I have spent a considerable amount of time looking at various apps already. What I want is to offer the customer an option to customize their item by uploading their individual design which gets printed on the item. They can purchase as many units of that customized item as they want, that's up to them. The setup fee is a fixed amount per uploaded design. So basically, the price calculated for each individual design variant of the product should be: product price * quanity + 5$ for setup. Let's say they order 10 cups at 4$ each with one same design for all 10 cups, then the price should be: 10*4 + 5 = 45$. But if they order 10 cups and each one has a unique design with a uniquely uploaded image, then it should be (4 + 5) * 10 = 90$. From what I have seen, there are apps that can do this, but they charge at least 10 bucks a month, which is steep right now since I am just setting up my shop. Some offer free tiers or trials, but they usually don't include the required functionality for me to even test if they work with my theme and such. I feel like I am really stuck right now because I thought switching to Shopify would make things a breeze, but instead it's like hitting a brick wall currently. With WooCommerce, this was also a challenge and needed to be setup specifically, but I ended up getting it to work and with only free plugins nonetheless. Is there an app you can recommend that I should look into for Shopify? For the record: I am not unwilling to shell out a few bucks a month for an app if it reliably does what I need it to do, but I would prefer to start out as small as possible while I am still just getting started.

The type of app you want is called a bundling app. It sounds like you already encountered them and you will need their paid tiers. The one I use is called easify. It has good documentation and support. And it has a price to work as you want it to. The setup would look like this: Listing has a price of 1 cup. Do not make variants. First option is choosing number of cups starting at $0 for 1 cup, $5 for 2 cups etc. Second option selects the number of custom names. Third field only shows if 2nd option has more than 1 quantity. This is a multi-line text field. Tell the custom to make each name on a new line. If you need multiple cup options or colours, this gets a bit more complex because you need to match a name field to a specific colour or cup option. Unfortunately this will cost, as will any other bundling app you find. The free tiers will not do what you need. Easify is 96 a year, if that is too much of an investment then idk what kind of business you intend to run.

Thanks for your response, I already invested a few hours today into the Easify app. I even got dev support via chat, they were very responsive, but in the end the app did not work as intended for me. Though I think your approach with a number of custom options for quantity, etc. is probably a clever workaround. I decided to not go with Easify when during testing I encountered the problem that removing the customized items from the cart still let the customization dummy products with their price tag sit in the card and I had no possibility to remove them. 96 bucks a year is not a problem, after I have verified that the desired app and Shopify as a whole will be what I finally switch over to. Right now, my webstore is still running WooCommerce and I am testing out the Shopify environment.
Though I think your approach with a number of custom options for quantity, etc. is probably a clever workaround. It's not a workaround, that is just how I would set it up properly. There are many ways to achieve the same end result. I got it working in a few mins. I don't know what questions you were asking support but this is honestly quite easy. Here's some screenshots of how I set it up. https://imgur.com/a/5RXmbJ5 The option set has Quantity and Text area options. For quantity you need to enable a price setting in advanced options. And that is literally it. This shows up as a single item like buying cups with the custom names attached. I can't see how text area looks on the order end, in the cart and checkout it is condensed. That would be a problem if the line break isn't represented on the order page. How many custom names do you expect to receive? Alternatives could be asking them to separate names with a comma or / forward slash. You can also enable file upload but that would be overkill unless you are expecting like 20+ names. What will take more time is styling this to look good. This may mean using inspector to find the CSS class responsible for the quantity box because it is very small out of the box, or asking support.

Easify is pretty powerful and has been in the market for many years. If you're open to try new apps, I've built one called Podifai Product Customizer and it's totally free atm. Similar to Easify, you could add multiple badges and set different prices for them.
