OpenUsage is free and open source. Also works with a variety of providers including Claude, Codex, Gemini and many others. https://github.com/robinebers/openusage

thanks, openusage doesn’t work with Antigravity

I got this - dunno if you are the dev or not but hopefully more like Z etc will be added soon

No I am not the Dev

Really good article. Thanks.

https://github.com/tddworks/ClaudeBar - it does Codex and others too Or https://www.openusage.ai/ Keep in mind there is no public API for usage limits, so all of these apps use your session cookies for getting the numbers, certainly not good for security.

Is there an iOS version of this?

+1 to Openusage, actually optimized well Stay away from Codexbar (which is arguably a lot more popular) completely AI generated and sloppy as hell

Codexbar does the job it’s pretty good, but i feel openusage is the best

There are some options listed here: https://denshub.com/en/ai-token-usage-monitors-macos/

For the privacy/security requirement, I’d treat any of these as high-trust apps: there isn’t a public usage-limit API for Plus/Pro/Codex, so a menubar app has to either scrape a signed-in web session or ask for cookies. If you use one, I’d prefer open source, store credentials only in Keychain, and run it from a separate browser/profile/account with the minimum access you can tolerate. A Mac App Store build wouldn’t by itself solve the “needs session access” issue.

A new one just came out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ProductivityApps/comments/1ts08xv/built_a_mac_menu_bar_app_because_tracking_my_ai/ https://www.tokens4breakfast.app/

If you're into small companions, check https://openpets.sh/, an open-source project to use Codex pets with included plugins to surface Claude and Codex limits and battery usage at the moment.

Disclosure: I’m the developer of NotchThings. It might partially fit what you’re looking for. NotchThings is a macOS utility that includes AI usage tracking for Codex and Claude, shown in a compact Mac-style panel in your notch. It’s privacy-focused, available on the Mac App Store, and lifetime/no subscription. Gemini isn’t the main focus right now, so it may not be a perfect match if that’s required, but for Codex/Claude monitoring it could be useful.

Genuine question. What’s the realistic threat model on a personal machine? Work environments I get, compliance and IT policies are a thing. But for a simple token-usage tracker on your own computer: if the app isn’t carrying malware, adware, or an infostealer, what’s actually at risk? If you are so worried it phone home, you can just block it with Little Snitch. Anyway I don't really get this sudden obsession over privacy and security in this sub. Please enlighten me if I am missing something.

I use an iCloud-enabled version of CodexBar with iOS app - https://codexbarios.o1xhack.com . Seems to work fine for me

unbelievably useful, thank you!

UPDATE, 7 June 2026: After this post, AURA Technologies (the company behind TokenBar) reached out and cancelled my subscription. According to their confirmation email, a refund of the charge has also been processed (awaiting credit on my side). Leaving the original post below in edited form for context. --- Folks, a note about TokenBar. I tried their app to write my post on token usage monitors and after that tried to cancel their trial subscription via all means: in the app itself (no working cancellation option I could find), via Stripe and their tech support, and via my own bank. All said they could not do anything unless the merchant (the company behind TokenBar is AURA Technologies, see attached screenshot) cancels it. I tried to contact them via the email provided on the site (staff@tokenbar.site) and received no reply at the time. The flow looks like this: you subscribe via the official Stripe page to a FREE trial (1 or 3 days, depending on the link), and there was no working in-app option to cancel. The trial then converted to a monthly charge. As noted at the top, AURA Technologies contacted me after this post, cancelled the subscription and, per their email, processed a refund. Adding this update so the record is complete.
