Limit on meta fields & filters - how do you work with that?

A friend owns a sound & light store. Approximately 10k sku 's in more than 400 categories. All these products have a variety of specification on which they want to filter. These 400 categories match only in 80% of the cases with the built-in Shopify ones. There are no pro light categories, no truss to be found. We now found out that there are only 25 filters possible - but I can guarantee you an amplifier has different filterable things than a moving head light has .. How do you go about these limitations? The 'Shopify Premier' partner that sold them this forgot to mention this, I think ... I'm worked around the specs with json arrays in a meta field and iterating through those in liquid but the filters are a mystery/misery to me. I'm thinking of just javascripting my way through it on a collection level. Jscript in the collections liquid and feeding it a config through a meta field. Any other suggestions? This is my first rodeo/Shopify site ... I'm pretty fluent in PHP/SQL & JS.

I use an app to have better filters. The app needs to have a backend to replace Shopify filtering logic, I don’t think you can do it on the front end or you will have to load all products and then filter which will be slow.

Can you let me know how this works? You still need some products that appear or you load them from outside?
What? I am talking about filtering my products. There are lots of apps that offer better filtering for collection pages. I’m not sure what you are asking.

The 25 limitation is on Shopify's own app "Search & Discovery". Other apps don't have this limitation. If you are fluent in PHP/SQL & JS, you can also build this yourself, but you would need to load both the filters and the results using ajax requests from a server.
You can do some quazi filtering using tags, collections, types products, variants on the default collection with some custom code I just implemetned it but here's a collection that groups by type, product, tags and variants https://www.deskhero.ca/collections/switches Here's another one https://www.deskhero.ca/collections/new-arrivals Now I can filter with anything and I call them virtual collections Not sure if this is what you're looking for but it made my site a level or two more polished imo
