I work in IT and have for many years. In my current role I am finding that I am accumulating an ever-increasing amount of projects and responsibilities, all in their own stages and with their own needs, dependencies, etc... I am not a PM. I am involved as a technical resource. I am looking to do something similar to a personal kanban board, where I can put entries for to-do, in-progress, etc.... Within each item, the ability to make notes, add attachments, etc... Any free software suggestions?

For this kind of workload I would keep the system boring on purpose. You are not trying to become a PM; you are trying to stop carrying every dependency in your head. A simple Kanban board is probably enough if each card has: current status next action blocker/dependency owner or person you are waiting on last touched date notes/attachments Trello is the quickest free answer. Notion can do it too, but I would only use Notion if you already like it. Otherwise the setup becomes a project hiding inside the project. The habit matters more than the tool: review the board once a day, move stale cards, and make every card answer “what needs to happen next?”

Yes this is exactly what I need. I find I am being asked to plug into different tasks or projects of varying length or complexity on an almost daily basis now, and writing stuff down is not working any longer. I don't need to track due dates per se (although sometimes there are defined dates), but more need to track what I'm working on and what I need to work on... and the statuses, etc...

trello free tier does exactly this. kanban board, notes and attachments on each card, drag between columns. zero setup. notion can do it too but you’ll spend an afternoon configuring it before you actually start using it. for something this straightforward I’d just go trello

For personal Kanban with attachments and notes, Trello is the easiest zero-setup option. For a more powerful tool that nests notes directly inside tasks, Notion is unmatched.
