ORIGINAL REDDIT POST

Are there any reliable apps that can help me block distracting websites like TikTok or Reddit at certain times?

Original postr/software

When I’m trying to be productive, I check Reddit almost every 20 minutes to see if there are new posts in subreddits like r/kpop or if someone has left new comments. I also visit TikTok quite often. This seriously affects my focus, and by the end of the day, I often fail to finish my planned tasks, such as working on an article or reading 200 pages of a novel. Previously, I tried blocking websites through the hosts file. However, I could easily remove the website entries I added. Browser extensions like BlockSite can also be easily disabled or removed. So I’m looking for a more reliable solution, preferably a dedicated app that can prevent me from easily bypassing the restrictions. While searching, I came across a few apps such as AppCrypt and other website blockers, but I’d like to know whether this type of software actually works well in practice. Has anyone here used this type of software? Which apps would you recommend based on your experience? Thanks!

They're is a hosts file, so I think it's a desktop

Clearly, you have all the apps you need, but you're also in charge and lack self-control. Either surrender control to someone else or practice abstinence. For instance, you can make someone else the admin of your PC, have them take ownership of the HOSTS file, and then log in with a non-admin account.

Thanks for the advice! I hadn’t considered this approach before. I’ll try it out and see if it helps.

Try AdGuard Home. May take a bit of time to set up if you never done like self-hosting and DNS configuration before but it works pretty well. https://github.com/AdguardTeam/AdGuardHome/releases/latest

my brother, if you can't be away even for 20 mins, then there is simply one solution, delete these apps and live your life for 1 week without them, you would notice a big change

Maybe consider counselling. You would likely just disable any app that worked anyways. There is a big world out there. Ignore electronics for a while. You can do it! I realize I am on Reddit now, but even as a guy in his sixties with lots of spare time, I know when to walk away
