I know Samsung calendar can do something similar, was wondering if there was any app I could plug into Google Calendar that would use the same APIs as the alarm, so that I can see a full-screen message even when my screen is locked. Do you know anything like this? I need something reliable that won't get killed by battery optimization.

Yeah I use it. Samsung calendar does integrate with google calendar though, so you can still use google cal, just samsung calendar for alarms?
