I know people have asked for alternative messaging apps, but I really just want the simplest one possible. The old messaging app was fine, I dont know why they had to get rid of it. All I need is to be able to send and receive text messages. I dont need read receipts, a typing indicator, or emoji reactions. I mostly use texting for work-related things. It becomes a problem when Google messages is requiring me to have a data/wifi connection in order to send/receive texts. I reached out to a client asking if I needed to come to her house today and she responded saying that she had already messaged me about it - and thats when her text came in. I had turned on my data to send her the text, and thats when hers went through. Why am I not able to use a texting app without a wifi or data connection? So far every time someone recommends an app, they have ads. Why would a messaging app have ads??? Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

Does turning off RCS in the settings so Messages is using SMS/MMS not work?
I tried doing that and it kicked me out of all group messages and said they would be deleted in 30 days.
I don't fully remember because it's been so long, but I feel like it did that (had to start new group conversation threads) back when I switched to RCS originally. So it wouldn't surprise me if going back to MMS would need a new thread too.
I dont know what to tell you, I am able to send text messages without having a wifi or mobile data connection. SMS.
The group message that I was in was me and three of my friends. I created the group message on Samsung messages and it transferred over and I continued to use it on Google messages. But now that I have disabled RCS, I am still in the one with my mom and brother.
requiring me to have a data/wifi connection in order to send/receive texts. wait - do you not know how phones work
Correct. You need RCS support to participate in group messaging. And only Google Messages (and the discontinued Samsung Messages) provide that. You will have to stick with Google Messages and keep your mobile data on 24/7. No other solution fulfills all your requirements.
Just disable Chat RCS; don't share your data with third-party companies by using other apps (what Google collects is already enough) As for the you've been kicked out of groups, what did you expected, if that is a feature from Chats? When did you were able to have groups with sms?
Your going to have recreate all those group chats again as MMS.. to keep them going . Since they are currently RCS group chats. You would be doing that with any app in the play store.. because none have RCS. All your groups have to be recreated as an MMS group.

Textra?
Fossify Messages looks good and simple, just messages
Quik
QUIX CHAT (Not quik nor quick) — simple, no clutter, no AI. No phone number needed, works great for small group chats without the Google account hassle. Worth a look. (I help build it, happy to answer Qs.) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.quixyr.quixchat
If you're open to trying third party apps, you can try searching for ZenSMS on Play Store. It's local and privacy focused.
