Looking to break away from google ecosystem and been searching awhile for selfhosted option of google play books but cant really find any that mimics 1-to-1 with easy setup for a newbie. Also currently using tailscale. My requirements are rather simple i guess: - 2 way syncing of progress, highlight, note, annotation - offline reading and resync the above once connected - no additional setup like bookorbit with plugin for each device. Installing the app and connect to the server url is fine - supports web reading with annotation etc - supports web and android - books are centrally saved and hosted on a server instead of individual device - no need for metadata fetching, book name alone is sufficient - no need for audiobook support Thanks!! Edit: forgot to mention that would prefer straightforward setup instead of like needed to host an additional sync plugin

Tried that ca year ago. Unable to deploy it via docker compose. Maybe I logged bug that time. And I believe I am not that bad considering hosting Mailcow stack…. Not sure what is the state pf Librum right now but I am using Audiobookshelf
Thanks, let me check on those
Readest is your best bet
librum is the closest to your list, self-hostable server + native apps that sync progress, highlights and notes across devices and read offline, no per-device plugin dance. kavita is the other option but its annotation sync is weaker than its progress tracking, so test that against your highlight requirement first.
kavita or calibre-web for the library side, plus a reader app that talks OPDS. nothing is 1-to-1 with play books sync, but kavita gets close for comics and epubs if you care about a clean UI.
I'm also looking for something like this, it'd be nice to also have the visual effect of "passing the pages" like the Android app has when you swipe left or right. Not a deal breaker though but looks so cool 😉
