What's an incredibly good but not well known self hosted program?

NPMPLUS, not really unknown but really useful. The obvious ones are *arr stack, qbittorrent, pihole, homeassistant and immich for example. Also on https://community-scripts.org I tend to get a lot of inspiration. Currently making my own plant app which you can self host, use a catalog to get information about plants, make a watering schema but it keeps in mind if there’s a heatwave or rainfall. Also includes a map so you know where all your plants are wand when to fertilize or prune them. All automated and selfhosted(only API it uses is to gather weather information which isn’t needed so it can work 100% offline as well). Woodpecker It's a CI/CD system, but I use it for custom cron jobs that I want to run on my server. Spins up docker pods to do the jobs, gives me logging, notifications, all configured via yaml. Been bulletproof software for me.

I will always advertise Dozzle, a container log viewer. To me, it's the pinnacle of FOSS for this sub - it does only one thing (viewing logs), but extremely well. I didn't even know that one could make looking at logs so pleasing, but Amir (the creator) somehow managed to make it that way. It is lightweight, fast, great UI/UX AND he is also very quick with bugfixing or adding features! I am aware that I sound like a shill, but I'm just a big fan of Dozzle.

I really liked Fredy. This is an application for the German housing market. My husband an I searched unsuccessfully for quite a while for a new apartment. After I deployed it we were successful soon. But in the future I will use it again if it still works with all their German housing websites. Anyways it is a quite specific use case, but I wanted to talk about it nonetheless.

ActualBudget. It's like YNAB but more features for free.

Paperlessngx. My homelab spans four virtual hosts and 47 containers but I get so much joy out of the feeling of organisation and declutterring paperless gives me.

StreamHarvestarr is one of my most used, but I rarely see posts about it. I use it to download podcasts that have video casts from YouTube. Once you add a show in Sonarr and add the URL in SH's config it'll check for new episodes and download as needed. I had too many issues and other services keep naming conventions from YouTube, whereas this one gives me no issues.

Linkding - bookmark manager. Comes with a browser extension, and you'll never go back to browser bookmarks. I don't know if this really qualifies as "not well known" since it does have 10k GitHub stars, but I don't see it mentioned much.

My specific addition is Sprout Track by Oak-and-Sprout. Life saver. Setup was super simple (much needed since babies are a handful) and wife approved. Mobile-friendly with a nursery mode that I keep in kiosk mode on an old phone. I forked it so I could add some more tracking and metrics, which was helpful at the pediatrician. But we were shocked at how bad we are at mentally tracking the time since she last napped or ate, and it solved so many "why is she crying?!" More generally, I love Trilium. Switched from Obsidian when I struggled to get LiveSync or Sync working. Realized all the features I was trying to force into Obsidian were default in Trilium. Open source so I can back in better solutions than the Obsidian plugins I was writing. Plus, I am now gladly giving up "markdown everywhere" to have the ability to turn any notes immediately into a folder; I've been using that feature all the time.

Mealie. No longer do I keep recipes in a folder with prints, I now have a complete meal plan that I plan every weekend and never need to think about what to make. Just press the random button if I have trouble deciding and something pops up that I like.

I'll throw out `changedetection.io`, it's basically a self-hosted visual website change monitor. You point it at pages, set how often to check, and it'll screenshot diffs when something updates. Dead useful for tracking price drops, out-of-stock items coming back, or even just watching when a niche blog finally posts again. Nobody seems to mention it next to the usual media stack suspects.

I have a bunch of different hosts in my home (gaming PC, desktop, MacBook, servers). I use Local Content Share as a local pastebin like to just send text, snippets, code, files, media, whatever. Just drop it in from one computer and then pick it up on another. I don’t really see anyone talking about it but I seriously use it on a daily basis and have been for over three years.

Recent fan of Komga here, manages and hosts your comic book collection. Nothing crucial but was pleasantly surprised there was such a polished solution easily installed and foc.

Netbird. Good free self-hosted alternative to Tailscale.

i fully switched to Vikunja as my tasks manager - liking it very much and only stumbled upon by accident. its feature rich enough without overkilling it for a private, personal tasks manager.

I really like RomM and think it needs more attention. It recently had a UI overhaul too and, while it can still be a bit buggy, it’s a fun way to look at your Rom collection.

Omni-Tools. Its a very lightweight useful tool for image/video/text/pdf and more manipulation.

Komodo . The happy medium for container management across multiple machines without having to use Kubernetes
