Sometimes I ask ChatGPT to create a prompt for me that will do X. It will create a perfect prompt for me, and then at the end say something like, "I think what would really make this prompt do what you want is to add this sentence Y.". Then I have to copy and paste both. Why can't it just put that into the suggested prompt? Flairs are not clear to me so sorry if wrong one.

You can save some time and work by adding a rule to your custom instructions that requires it to give you fully complete suggestions/next steps, and never gives you patchwork to implement yourself if it’s capable of doing the work itself.

When I ask for help with prompting I usually add "Have I forgotten anything, or is there anything I have neglected to account for?" Fire hose time. Stupid question: does the fire hose of suggestions justify the time required reading & reacting to it? Integrated over all instances I mean. No doubts some will be useful some of the time. But sum all time spent versus utility, is it worth it in your opinion? And the stuff it suggests when helpful is it "oh yeah, nice, might as well incorporate that" or is it more at the "HOLY SHIT! I ALMOST FORGOT THAT THING ABOUT NOT SETTING STUFF ON FIRE! THANKS CHATGPT!" end of the spectrum?

Human agency. You are free to accept or reject what it has to offer. If you're that much in a hurry, scrape off everything except what you need.

When that happens, I just ask, “Can you add that in and rewrite the whole prompt?” Then I only have one thing to copy.
Came here to say this. Same for any text where some parts get edited. In the end I always say “now give me the whole thing again as one piece of clean text”. It’s also good to ask for editable text blocks, because then you make your own changes right there before copying.
It’s not human agency when the AI system does it without relevant reasoning and critical thinking. It’s just an annoying behavior or faux “helpfulness” that wastes time. Especially when we know that the probabilities aren’t finishing and then all of a sudden “realizing” there’s more. It’s so annoying and not at all useful IMO.

You can add some text in your custom instructions requiring it to check its work before delivering you a response and always ensuring it takes all of the steps it can take itself before passing off the work to you. And that it should never give you patchwork when it can provide a complete response itself.
It might be a 'human agency' thing. Cherish that. It gave you what you wanted, and then volunteered an addition. You are always free to accept or reject the addition. LOL I'M DYING HERE (aren't we all?) But is this seriously how people prompt craft? I mean I did it like this for a couple of weeks sure, but wow. No, repaste the first one, then annotate the changes yourself. You'll get much better results.
It will create a perfect prompt for me, ... So why even add sentence Y? It was perfect. Just because the "helpful" suggestion is given, doesn't mean the "helpful" suggestion should be incorporated. Often enough the helpful suggestions are garbage, which is why I have custom instruction to not do that. If I want some ideas, I will ask for it. For the rest I'd like it to stay focused.
