Check out Peristyle on f-droid, or Paperize on Izzy. I don't use them currently because I'm one of the weirdos that has a different day and night wallpaper folder for each day, and automatically change wallpaper every 42 minutes lol. But for simpler setup like change between 1 day and 1 night wallpaper it is more than enough. Though you have to check if they do have a setting based on system theme. Mine is permanently on night mode so it doesn't matter to me.
Won't this impact the battery?
I use paperize it's on github and works great
If you can't find a dedicated wallpaper app that you like, you could always use an automation app like Tasker to change wallpaper. You could set wallpaper based upon system mode (light or dark), time of day, location, or any number of other conditions.
