My husband and I are in the market for a new car. We’re looking at 2026 models with good APR incentives. I’m looking to keep our budget around $40,000 or below. We need a good family car that can fit two rear-facing car seats in the back (looking for something with about 40” rear passenger legroom). My husband is 6’3”, so it can be tricky finding a car that can fit a rear-facing carseat behind him. I’m finding that the more reliable models in Toyota or Honda are out of our price range for the size car we need. We went yesterday and test drove a 2026 VW Tiguan R-Line Black, and we both loved it. It has decent reviews on Edmunds & Car and Driver, but I’ve seen a lot of conversation online about lemons, and it not being very reliable. We also test drove a 2026 Hyundai Santa Fe SEL Hybrid. Normally this car would be a little out of our price range, but they’re running a 0% APR for 60 months. It’s kind of ugly, but the inside is nice, and I like the way it drove. I also liked that it has an optional third row if we needed it. My husband didn’t really like it as much, and we both liked the Tiguan better. I know Hyundai used to get a bad rep for reliability, but I feel that that’s improved over recent years, and they have an excellent warranty. I’m really just looking for opinions on these two cars, but I’m also open to hearing suggestions for other models that might fit our needs. I’m not really interested in buying a used car with interest rates what they are right now. Thank you!

Why not a cheaper Tucson instead of Santa Fe? Tucson is the same size as Tiguan, Tucson has plenty of space / legroom. Santa Fe is a whole category above. Avoid Tiguan, the new gen is unreliable. Subaru Outback is very spacious and comfortable (ride comfort, suspension) and offers 0.9% financning, great value for money
Seltos is still a smaller vehicle
I find the Tuscon much better looking and it does have a roomy backseat
Might want to go check out Kia. New 2027 Seltos I believe is bigger than previous model so the back seat might fit the size issue. Sportage and Sorento both hit your price range so you can shop each one. Think Telluride is mid 40s tho.
Tiguan has had some reliability issues. Look into this before making your purchase. Supposedly Hyundai fixed this issues regard the piston rings.
If you have to choose between the two, absolutely get the Hyundai. The 2026 Tiguan is dealing with a major driveability issue where the turbos fail or trigger 'limp mode' at even 1,000 miles. Plus, VW cuts your warranty protection off at 50k miles.
You should be targeting 7-10% off MSRP on the Santa Fe HEV. Yes HMF is offering 0% APR but that is separate from and stackable with the discount you negotiate with the dealership.
I couldn’t justify spending $40K+ on something that I thought was ugly, so, Tiguan.
The warranty on the Hyundai is great but you actually have to enjoy looking at the thing for 5 years, if your husband already isn't into it that's a tough sell
