Where to start for addition?

2004 cabin, simple gable roof, rectangular footprint. Can only likely add on 1 direction or expand upwards. There may be room for another house on another part of the lot, but that would chew up useable lawn. It seems like there’s too many options. Where do we start? Structural engineer or architect.

I'd talk to an architect to get an idea of your options and then run your favorites by the structural engineer to see if they catch any issues that may arise before committing to a plan.

I’d start with zoning and site feasibility before structural engineering: setbacks, lot coverage, height, access and whether a second dwelling is allowed. Then use an architect to compare options, and bring in the engineer once there’s a concept worth pursuing.
At some point early in the process, get a tape measure and go stand outside where you are considering the addition. Mark off the building corners and layout the space so you can get a better visual.
