A. Guest posts / contributed articles Writing articles for other websites or industry publications (usually with a backlink). B. Earned or sponsored media features Being interviewed on podcasts. Being featured in newsletters. Having your startup written about by journalists or publications. Founder interviews. Media mentions in trusted industry outlets. I'm interested in both traffic and long-term business impact, such as: Brand awareness Credibility and trust SEO Customer acquisition Partnerships Investors Hiring A few questions: Which delivered the highest ROI for you, and why? Where do you typically find guest posting opportunities? Where do you find opportunities to get interviewed or featured? If you had a limited budget, which would you invest in first?

If you do paid acquisition properly it makes everything you mentioned inconsequential. If you’re trying to make a name for yourself, sure, do some podcasts. If it’s social proof for increasing conversions, post proof of results you drive. Getting written about and published is easy work, and feels good in the moment. But the press spikes, and then dies. You’re on a never ending hamster wheel. Good work and results compound. Have the press be an after effect.

I like the distinction between attention and traction. Press can create awareness, but it doesn't automatically create demand. If the product consistently solves an important problem, good stories tend to spread further and every mention becomes more valuable because there's something worth talking about.

podcasts have been the one where people actually reach out after, guest posts felt more like an seo thing than a people thing. curious what others say though.

this is true for a lot of B2B stuff, but it kinda depends on ticket size and sales cycle too. paid can be a monster if your funnel is tight, but for higher trust / longer cycles, those earned features sometimes warm people up before they ever see your ads.

the roi difference between these two isnt really about which one performs better in a vacuum, its that they pass value through completely different mechanisms. a guest post with a backlink is basically an seo/discovery play, its slow, it compounds over months as google indexes and trusts the link more, and almost nobody clicks through immediately when they read it. A podcast or being featured somewhere is a trust play, it converts faster because a real person vouched for you in their own voice, but it fades fast once the episode or article is old news and rarely does much for your rankings since most of those links are nofollow anyway. if your budget is genuinely limited id put it toward earned features first specifically because youre also asking about investors and hiring, not just customers, a founder interview or podcast appearance does double duty for those two in a way a guest post never will, nobody hires based on a backlink. Use guest posts later as more of a steady background seo habit once you have time, not as your primary growth bet right now. on where to actually find opportunities since nobody answered that part, for podcasts the fastest way is looking at podcasts your actual customers already listen to (not "startup podcasts" broadly) and pitching the host a specific story angle, not "have me on to talk about my startup." For guest posts, most publications that accept them have it buried in their footer or a "write for us" page, or you can look at who else in your space has guest posted recently and reach out to the same editor since theyve already proven theyll publish outside writers on your topic.
