hi! I want to try a new face wash and don't know what to look for. I don't get much acne and my skin type is combination - sometimes oily sometimes dry. Don't mind higher-end, but would prefer a pretty standard one that wouldn't hurt the bank to buy again…

I have used cetaphil for a long time but I am ready to graduate and start my skincare journey. let me know your suggestions! thanks!! note: i have some extra skincare things like rhode milk, elf dew drops, caffeine serum that i like and want to incorporate into a routine, if that helps the suggestions at all. EDIT: I have an ulta gift card so anything available there is great. Also idk if I’m using “combination” right, probably just normal skin.

Of all the skincare you will want to buy, the one thing that you don't need to spend a lot of money on is a face cleanser. The product is only in contact with your skin for about 1 minute, then rinsed off, so any sort of added ingredients will not be absorbed into your skin. The cleansing products that claim to have "brightening" or "anti-aging" benefits are just gimmicks. Yes, there might be special ingredients in them, but if your skin isn't able to absorb them then it's not really helping you all that much. You just need something that is effective at removing sunscreen, dirt and makeup. So that's why I'd recommend brands like Cerave and even Cetaphil. You just want something that's fragrance-free and effective and removing what's on your face. I personally use the Cerave cream-to-foam. However, if you wear makeup, there is some benefit to using a balm-style cleanser before using a more typical water-based cleanser. This is called the "double cleansing" method. A balm style cleanser has oils in it that are actually better at removing makeup and water-resistant sunscreen. These are applied using dry hands to your dry face (right over makeup if you're wearing any). It's really important to apply it dry. You rub that in for 60 seconds before rinsing it off with water. Then you immediately go on to apply your water-based cleanser which helps to remove any of the oils from the first cleanser. For a balm style cleanser, I'd recommend the Remedy for Skin Derm Dissolve (sold at Target) or the Krave Beauty Makeup Re-wined (Amazon). The double-cleanse method is optional though. It tends to work well for people who are prone to getting clogged pores or when a water-based cleanser isn't working well enough to remove the types of makeup a person wears.
CeraVe cream to foam
I've liked La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Cleanser because it cleans well without leaving my face tight. CeraVe Foaming Cleanser is another solid option if you get a little oily sometimes. Since you already have other skincare products, keep the cleanser simple so it doesn't compete with everything else.
I use Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser by COSRX - good for multiple skin types and doesn’t strip my skin.
Check out Estée Lauder daywear glow boost jelly cleanser. Available at Ulta in a small and large size. I like it as my travel cleanser because it removes makeup without drying out my skin and works well for tired travel skin
