User complaints? GitHub activity? Revenue signals? Community discussions? Founder commitment? Curious how other builders think about this.

I think AI is making execution cheaper, but it's also making ideas easier to copy. That means understanding the customer and solving a real pain point matters even more than before. A flashy AI feature might get attention, but it will not keep people around if the underlying product is not valuable.
With cheaper execution comes both up and downsides. Vulnerabilities, ethics, accessibility and churn have all crippled projects I’ve worked on first had. We had to complexly decouple an entire dev team because the project managers got brave when they thought they could fast track major features through on enterprise platform and ended up causing enough churn to get the team pulled off the project. Human in the loop is only useful if that human understands where the pitfalls come from and not when you’re working in the real world of tech where you end up burning massive resources and company reputations.

there're other competitors in the market with high revenue
The fact it’s an AI idea isn’t really worth anything. Ideas are 10 a penny. Anyone can have them. The ultimate question that needs asking first is “what problem are you solving?”. If you can’t answer that then it’s a non starter. After that it’s “is there enough of a market for it?” Fringe ideas are launched and built all the time but don’t get traction and die or get realised at a price point that immediately kills it off. Or is a temporary stop gap before someone else comes along and wipes you out. That’s been the world of business for generations and AI won’t solve that one.

The strongest signal is seeing people actively complain about a tedious process in community discussions. If users are already paying for clunky workarounds or spending hours doing things manually, an AI solution that solves that specific pain point is usually worth building.
I look for people already hacking around the problem before a product exists. If someone is stitching together ChatGPT, Sheets, Zapier, and random manual steps and still complaining, that’s usually a better signal than GitHub stars or generic interest because the pain is already expensive.
