I use my desktop just for MS word, watching videos, photos, as a storage backup, very basic stuff. I dont use internet on it. Its serving my purpose even though its old. My desktop has some issues. Help me resolve them. My CPU bios is gone. – what should I do? My hard disk has gotten virus (TROJAN WORM). Its duplicating files and leaving no memory space. The files come back even after I delete it. The desktop is not connected to any internet. The virus came in coz I used my pen drive on some1 elses laptop. My system got infected when I connected that pen drive to my system. – how can I remove the virus without any data getting corrupted or lost. 3. It’s a 15 yr old PC. Should I keep it or sell it off and buy a new one.

I'm pretty sure your bios is not gone. Learn what a live linux mint usb is. Use it to see what's on your hard disk, save whatever important files you have on to another hard disk or cloud storage from there, then erase everything and re-install windows or shift to linux mint, because it will run a lot better.
its not updating dates.. it said bios has some issue something when i used to start.

There's a small coin cell battery on the motherboard, model name CR2032 , 3 volts. That maintains the time once you set it. It must have run out of charge. A new one will cost around 30 to 50 rupees per piece. You can get it at a watch shop or a computer shop. It is better that you re-install your OS. You shouldn't be using XP in 2026, simply because there are no security updates for it. And if you ever connect it to the internet or connect an infected pendrive like you just did, you're most definitely going to get a virus in less than a minute or two. Linux mint is a decent option because you'll get updates, and it won't get windows based viruses. It will also run much faster than windows.
Your OS doesn't need to be re-installed, you'll have to get avast and update the virus definitions and run a scan while the virus is actively duplicating itself
Yes, from a security point of view, it is. Although windows xp has a soft corner in my heart, I do remember having to format and re-install every month , to the extent that I still remember parts of the CD-Key even today, 20 years later.
so my os has to be reinstalled? even if i run an anti virus like avast ?
Buy another basic PC. Round my way (UK), I can get fanless ex-business basic machines for around £30-40 with Win10 pre-installed. Get a USB stick. Make a boot USB from Microsoft's website. Buy a USB caddy suitable for the HDD in the current machine. Take the HDD out, place it in the caddy, connect to the new machine. Copy your files from the caddy drive to the new machine. Since you're not booting from that drive, there's a good chance this will look straight past the virus. If not, and the new machine gets infected, you can reload it from the boot USB you made.
