Bosch dishwasher has salt compartment but no water softener?

I've owned my Bosch 300 series (SHEM53Z35C) dishwasher for a few years. It's a North American model. There is a screw cap to the left of the filter compartment on the bottom and looking it up online, it's the container for salt for the built-in water softener. However, my user manual says nothing about a water softener or salt, the online spec sheet for it (https://media3.bsh-group.com/Documents/MCDOC03272074_SHEM53Z35C-CA-ENG.pdf) , under the "water softener" section, says "no". Supposedly, Bosch dishwashers with this feature will have a warning light when the salt is low and I've never seen this light. So do you think it actually has the water softener feature, but the sensor and warning light has been disabled, so if I add dishwasher salt, it will work? Or did Bosch just use the same dishwasher bottom as the softener models but mine won't work because it needs other softener components?

That is indeed very odd. I believe during COVID Bosch brought in German models for us market
It's empty and dry. The shiny parts are reflections from my flashlight, not water. It's been about two days since I ran the last wash.
If you open the lid and there’s a tank filled with water- then it definitely has a softener. Would have to be some sort of mistake in the product specs that it’s not listed.
