I was thinking about starting up a business where I build websites for small businesses in my area. I know it's a saturated market, but I also feel like the skill gap in it is pretty huge. I was planning to making it into a one stop shop where the client pays an upfront fee for me to build the website, nothing crazy like $300-$500, and then a monthly fee of like $100, for me to host, maintain, and make any changes needed to their website. I was wondering if anyone else does this and has any tips, also if it's a realistic or good business to start if done well. Also any tips on which tools to use, how to bring in clients, and realistic pricing advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

the pricing is low for the upfront but the monthly model makes sense if you're actually doing hosting and updates. at my agency we've found $100/month works if you're clear about what's included (how many edits, response time, etc). wordpress is the easiest platform to maintain at scale since you can batch updates and use managed hosting. biggest challenge is getting clients to understand they're paying for reliability and speed, not just the site itself.
