Stash v2.1 – A tactile control layer for macOS

One of my favourite things about macOS is how polished the interactions are (and favourite things about Apple in general). So I ended up building Stash. the edge/corner idea is nice, but i would test conflict handling harder than the animations. hot corners , hidden dock , stage manager , fullscreen apps, external displays, and menu bar apps can all fight for the same muscle memory. one thing that would make me trust this faster is a small setup check that says which gestures/edges might conflict before i spend time tuning it.
Thanks! That's fair. A few of those are already handled (multi-monitor calibration, edge priority and corner conflict handling), but I like the idea of making that more visible during setup. A simple system check showing what's been detected would probably be a good future update.
interesting concept. how does it handle conflicts with apps that already have their own gesture stuff, like figma and some electron apps to weird things with trackpad gestures already. also curious about the audio output controls, is that using core audio tap? feels like theres been a bunch of apps lately trying to fill the gap where macOS just doesnt give you enough control
Good question. Stash doesn’t hook into normal trackpad gestures like pinch/zoom/rotate. The controls reveal when you push the cursor into a configured screen edge/corner. Once the control is visible, two-finger scroll or mouse wheel adjusts that Stash control. Outside of those edge/corner zones, apps like Figma should keep their normal gesture behaviour. For audio output, I’m using Core Audio to enumerate/switch output devices. It isn’t tapping or processing the audio stream.

Just a note that at one point I had two different apps installed on my Mac that were called Stash. So of course you get Stash and Stash 2, etc. in your Apps folder. One of them was from the App Store I believe. This would be a third Stash. What other names have you considered along the way? What about Dials? Or (since not all of your controls are dials) how about Tactile? Damn, there's already one with that name on Github. Good note haha, well it came to mind when it originally started as “Stash, a hidden dock pocket for Mac” but then it evolved into “hidden tactile controls”. After the last few updates. Guess I’ll keep the name but good point. Don’t think hippo would be ideal……. Hahah

For me, reaching up to the dedicated keyboard buttons to adjust these settings is easier, quicker, and is already baked into my muscle memory. But I love the look and idea! I wondered about the possibility of assigning certain keystrokes or keyboard/gesture/mouse click combos to the dials. I work every day in video and audio NLEs and design software (Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, Illustrator) and I often use a Bluetooth connected shortcut dial to make it easy to “dial in” adjustments to things like volume, size, x & y coordinates, etc., as well as using the dial to navigate the timelines and zoom my view in & out. I think it’d be cool to be able to keep my left hand on the keyboard and my right hand on my track ball, and be able to use Stash as my dial UI instead of a physical dial. I admittedly don’t know if that workflow would become useful or be effortless enough to replace my physical dial, but it’s what I instantly thought of when I saw your demo video. And if it is a viable alternative, it could open up a whole new user base.
Hmmm this is an interesting one. Do you essentially mean custom assignments/macros for a dial? I have thought about this as a future update, possibly dials that interact with the current front most application (timeline scrubbing etc maybe?) Apologies for the ignorance I’m not an editor haha so some of that terminology is right over my head.
I really dig the idea and the dials and controls are right up my alley. But man, I am suck a keyboard warrior I find it hard to try to change that flow. But this might get me to try. Thanks!
