Imagin Raw - folder based photo culling app (Bridge replacement)
Problem: I don’t like the process of importing my photos inside a black boxed app, I don’t know what happens with them and how i’ll back them up, and it’s probably a trauma from the iTunes days when importing music was duplicating and hiding it. That’s why I use Adobe Bridge to manage my photos. The problem with Bridge though is that it’s an extremely heavy app and slow to launch, cpu and memory intensive, and my last version was still on intel and felt abandoned. That’s why I built Imagin Raw https://apps.apple.com/app/imagin-raw/id6760548347?mt=12 The main goal was to have a very lightweight app and clean interface that doesn’t waste any space. It is used only for organizing and culling photos, the editing is done in an external editor of your choice (i cannot do better than the established apps so no point in wasting time like others do). My favourite feature is the photo alignment to top-left, i can place a pip youtube window on top without overlapping the photos too much. Features: - 100% native, SwiftUI and AppKit for thumbnails - give access only to the folders you want, individual folders, or the entire Photos folder for the best experience - rating and labeling compatible with Adobe sidecars. For jpegs it is done in the file without reencoding it - reject photos then delete all at once - copy photos from sd cards in 2 simultaneous locations. Many options to rename and organize into subfolders are available. - find duplicates and similar photos and view them in review mode, much easier to decide which to keep or delete. Here i have another killer feature, you can rate/label/reject the photos without actually selecting them, just hover. - search for files and folders using the macos spotlight engine, your photos are not indexed by the app - add black frame around your exported photos and reexport as tiff, this is so i can fit 2:3 photos on 3:4 for instagram. - purge the cache on individual folders or all at once (in case you try the app and decide it’s trash) Comparison: compared to Bridge, Imagin Raw is much lighter, 4Mb vs 2Gb. You’d say that i left something out for that size, but i think i left out the useless things, i have the essential things and some tools on top that Bridge doesn’t, like finding duplicates and group by day. The layout is the same as Bridge: files column (can be hidden quickly with C), thumbnails (2 grid types switch with G), then the big preview. Previewing videos does not even compare by any stretch of the imagination. Where Bridge is in advantage is the editing applied to the thumbnails and previews, i cannot use the ACR engine to apply those changes like Bridge does but i will try to apply the basic edits in a future version. You can see though which photos were edited and which not Pricing: First version is free in the AppStore, i might charge from the next update. I am also preparing an iOS version from the same codebase to replace the mess apple did in Photos, but i will also make it a scouting app.

Very nice clean interface. What is the purpose for Approved & Reject? After selecting a rating, there doesn't appear to be an option to select back as "no rating". Would be nice if there is an option to view in Full screen.
Thanks. Approve is one of the labels from Bridge, i use it to mark the photos i will edit, but others might use it differently. Anyhow, that’s why i added a second shortcut for it, A. Reject(X) is to mark the photos you want to delete, after you mark all the photos in an album you can right click on one of them, or select from the filters at the bottom, and delete permanently all of them at once. This action is not creating a sidecar file, it’s kept only in memory till you change the album. I personally keep only one photo from a sequence since they are all so similar, so i reject the ones i don’t want. You are right with the rating, i missed it, ‘-‘ removes the label and i’ll add to remove the rating as well. It can be removed from the context menu now. Full screen works from the menu bar, or are you referring like bridge viewing one photo at a time in fullscreen?

I have never been very keen on Bridge, I used it because it was there, rather than because it is wonderful. This looks like it is much more useful, thank you for your efforts. I will have a play with it, as I currently have several hundred holiday photos to wade through to keep or discard and anything which makes that process easier gets my vote Edit: First impressions. I like it very much, none of the extraneous stuff that Bridge seems to find essential and I cannot find any use for whatsoever. A few things I have noticed: it sometimes seems to take a long time to load from a folder. I am using a MB M1, so not brand new but by no means an antique. In fact I have had to quit and then reload for the folder contents to be shown. Then other times it loads almost immediately. This behaviour seems to be regardless of the size of said folder. I would also echo the the full screen comment above. I really like the super zoom, but a navigation box would be useful, there is sometimes a lot of photo to excavate to find one small bit. I hope that this does not seem too much like nit-picking. As I say, I really like it and will certainly be carrying on using it, especially for being able to set date captured as a default setting. With two cameras and two Iphones contributing photos sorting has always been a bit of a headache. This is so much better.
Thanks for the feedback. I don’t think your computer is the problem for slow loading, but i don’t know what else could it be either since i never encountered it, will add more feedback on the screen. Reading the list of files should be instant from any hdd, i don’t see delays even from sdcards. I guess you don’t see the ‘collecting metadata’ at the bottom, that appears after the list of photos is loaded and can take several seconds for large albums
i just installed it and face the same behaviour. in fact, on first open after clicking add your first folder, literally nothing happened. i tried it thrice, quit the app, reopened, and thankfully the folder had been added and i saw the main screen. then began the wait. it took so long that i ultimately removed the folder and quit the app. then i was greeted again with the welcome screen with the same non-functioning add button, so again, add, no result, quit, and then on reopen the folder was added. this time i chose a much more manageable folder - 10 photos. i have waited for 2 min 30 s for it to complete indexing. i thought that perhaps it again needs a quit and reopen ... nope, on reopen i again see Collecting metadata.. at the bottom. 10 images. i'm running an M1 pro, but ilterally no computer in the past 15 years ought to struggle with this. it also uses next to no CPU. far from being multithreaded i don't think it even uses the performance cores. as i click post on this comment the app has been collecting metadata on my ten image folder for near about eight minutes. i see nine thumbnails, which is certainly more than i saw at the beginning. not an encouraging impression unfortunately.
Very cool and smooth so far. I’ve some old .JPG photos that doesn’t show in the app. What are the exact extensions supported?
Thanks. Jpg should be no problem, do you have also a raw with the same name? Cause in this case i hide the jpg. If not, maybe you can send me the file and i’ll take a look

Thanks. I was not aware of this extension, i have only heic. If it works in Finder it will work here but i have to add it to the list of supported images first. Probably a better image detection mechanism is needed here, to not look at the extension
Hi! I have a pretty niche problem that most culling software doesn't handle well, FastRawViewer being one of the few exceptions. When shooting with my Fujifilm camera, I shoot in JPEG + RAW, but the culling experience across most software is frustrating. I can't easily toggle between the two file types, stars/ratings don't apply to both simultaneously, and the overall workflow feels clunky, especially in Lightroom Classic. Does your culling software have a dedicated toggle for switching between JPEGs and RAWs during culling?
I was actually thinking to display both of them at once, but it will take some important space from the preview. Do you think a toggle is the best workflow? And do you mean a toggle in the preview area to switch temporarily, or something more permanent? I can try all 3 at once perhaps. About the rating good idea, it does not apply to the jpg right now
especially in Lightroom Classic. ?? so confused to see this, this was a feature all the way back in Lightroom 4 when I first bought it!

That is a great idea, i do miss them sometime, even if 5min ago i was aware of the meeting, i just miss it. My problem is though that i use only the browser for the work email and stuff because the password resets so often, i just don’t want to deal with it to have it in the calendar and stuff.
