MacMenuBar just reached 1,500+ menu bar

完整上下文原始内容 · Reddit

Seven years ago I started collecting macOS menu bar apps as a small personal list. I just wanted to know how many menu bar apps were out there. I thought maybe a few hundred, but now, years later, I know there are many, many more. Anyway, the collection includes everything from productivity tools and system utilities to tiny one-purpose apps that solve very specific problems. I’m still adding new apps almost every day, and I try to keep the collection focused on actual menu bar apps, not just apps that happen to have an icon there, but real menu bar-first apps. Thanks to everyone here who has shared suggestions, feedback, and hidden gems over the years. https://macmenubar.com

This site should be bookmarked by anyone who regularly has a need for Mac software. I visit it almost daily.

congrats dude, love seeing your journey so far. I'm also working on a directory called discovermacapps for mac apps, hopefully I could reach that milestone someday, However I don't think I will ever reach it as I manually curate and list a lot of them myself. Btw how do you ensure that you don't receive any app listing that has some malicious code/vulnerability and also stale listing of those apps that are no longer maintained?

Thank you! It’s definitely a lot of (manual) work. For security, I run every app that isn’t signed by Apple through VirusTotal before adding it. It’s not a perfect solution, but it helps. I’m also considering making the requirements stricter in the future and only accepting apps that are properly signed by Apple. But not sure about that. And abandonware, yeah that's hard. I’m currently looking into whether AI could help me with detecting apps that are no longer maintained. I also have a report form on the website where users can flag apps that appear to be abandoned. All the best with your own journey!

This is an amazing resource! Thanks for giving Chirpy an early boost as well back in 2024 👏🏼

Congrats Luuk! I still remember our first interaction when I submitted ClipboardAI. Love how clear and fast your responses are, even after so many years of managing the site! Keep going and this will be every Mac user's dream site to find the tool of their choice.

I have developed a small menu bar app for window management inspired by Vim/Vimium: www.ankylix.com Do you think it qualifies for your awesome list? If so, I will submit it. Thanks!

You can submit your app here, and I'll take a look: https://macmenubar.com/submit-your-menu-bar-app/

1,500 is a wild number to have hand-curated. I've gone down a few menu bar app rabbit holes myself and it's wild how much variety there is once you actually start looking + most people have no idea how deep this category goes. How do you personally decide what's worth adding vs. skipping? Genuinely curious what your bar is for "menu bar-first" vs. just has-an-icon-there.

Feel free to add Barista, a suite/manager of 35+ menu-bar widgets ranging from email client to calendar, rss reader, clipboard manager, scratchpad etc. It also ships with its floating bar baked-in in case there is no space in the macOS menu-bar due to the notch.

I’m sure there will be more, because I am working at least on two new menu bar apps.

Thanks for working on this great directory. I have been working on a mac menu bar app called pausebar.app I will soon get in touch with you and get it listed.
