[OS] Sniffnet: free app to monitor Internet traffic
Hey! I've been working on this app for almost 4 years and my goal is to make network traffic analysis easier for everyone. Since my previous post last year in this sub was of interest for many, today I'm here to share that Sniffnet has been recently updated to version 1.5 and, among other new features, it now allows to see the list of apps and programs that are using your network bandwidth, making it a step closer to be a fully open-source and free alternative to Little Snitch. Great app! And now I'm deeply worried that my largest traffic amount goes to Romania , not the typical US data centers or my own European country... Thanks for at least giving me this information so I can check in more detail...
Mm interesting… you can lookup that IP to know more about it. If you’re worried about it being malicious, Sniffnet also allows you importing or defining custom IP blacklists… may be worth checking

For someone who uses this type of utility pretty occasionally and is far from knowledgeable about network stuff, how is this different/better/worse than lulu or little snitch? Not intended as a criticism just wondering
Sniffnet isn’t aimed at blocking traffic, but rather at analyzing and inspecting it. And it’s cross-platform.

Looks interesting, I'm defnitely going to try it. I was using LittleSnitch for quite some while, but I did not migrate it to my new MacBook (yet). Can Sniffet also block unwanted traffic from certain apps / domains like LittleSnitch did or does it just display / monitor the traffic? BTW: I like the name of your iPhone... ;-)
Perfect - I've been looking for something like this. I have several Macs that do different things on my internal network. I know there is a lot of back-and-forth chatter between two of them, and this will help me figure out what's causing it.
I have MacBook pro with m4 max chip, with Sequoia Version 15.7.3. I couldn't run the app. Do I have to give special permission or smth?
Great app! Does it have historic data over a certain period? It will help filter out the spikes of traffic from the actual bad actors.
It has all the network connections since the start of the analysis saved in the Inspect page (not visible from the screenshot). You can also export the complete traffic as PCAP file and later re-inspect it.
I don't see a need for this for myself right now, but 4 years and making it open source is bonkers. What can I do, but drop a star and an upvote?

Congrats 4 years, that's serious dedication. Quick question: how are you handling per-process traffic attribution on macOS? Last time I looked into it, the OS makes that surprisingly hard without a network extension. Did you go the NetworkExtension route or something else? Also love that you're going for a Little Snitch alternative — that space needs an open-source contender.
Unique design. Anything inspire it?
Not really, just my personal taste and improvements over the years. However the horizontal data bars and country flag placement were inspired by Glasswire
