Eter 3.0: a clean internet radio app for Mac, now with a redesigned grid-based UI

完整上下文原始内容 · Reddit

Hey r/macapps, I last posted about Eter, our internet radio app for Apple devices, when version 2.0 shipped. It's been a while. Krystian originally built and released it five years ago, and we brought it into the Apparent Software fold so the team could keep growing it together. We’re a small Mac but 20-year old shop (you might know Trickster, ImageFramer, or Cashculator), and Eter is the one we built to do exactly one thing well: be a clean, no-nonsense internet radio receiver that works on all Apple devices. The new grid view and player in Eter 3.0 Problem: There are many apps for internet radio but Eter is getting consistent praise. No ads, no subscription. Find stations in our database or paste any stream URL. Organize favourites. Shazam recognition tells you what’s currently playing, and a played-tracks history lets you find that song you heard yesterday but didn’t write down or open it in Apple Music or Spotify. Favourites sync across your Apple devices via iCloud. No accounts, no servers, nothing tracked. VoiceOver support has been a first-class concern from day one and in last year Eter was nominated for app of the year by AppleVis community for its stellar accessibility. Comparison: There are other internet radio apps on the Mac. Some are free with ads, some are companion apps to a specific tuner ecosystem (iHeartRadio, TuneIn, etc). Eter’s positioning: ad-free, one-time purchase, native, and built by a small team that actually responds to support emails. So, version 3.0 just shipped. The Mac app received many improvements: A grid view for stations Until now, the Mac app showed stations as a list in the sidebar, with most of the window taken up by artwork. In 3.0, station tiles fill the main window. More stations on screen, much nicer look, and you can see the large artwork, if you want. The player view has been rebuilt as well. The whole design also looks great on Tahoe with its Liquid Glass look. Refreshed MiniPlayer for macOS Tahoe The menu bar MiniPlayer keeps the list view but its look has been refreshed to fit the Liquid Glass interface in macOS Tahoe. Also works on other devices The grid view ships on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV too. The Apple TV app grew up: search and add stations directly, browse history, sleep timer, Top Shelf support. Usable on its own now, not just as a companion. Eter for Android is in final beta 🤫 . Same feature set as iPhone. Pricing and availability: Homepage: https://eter.apparentsoft.com Mac App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/eter-streaming-internet-radio/id1523221566 Free download, one-time purchase (US$8.99) to unlock the full experience on each platform. Family sharing enabled. Also available on Setapp. Happy to answer any questions.

As a dev who appreciates clean, native macOS software, seeing an internet radio app that rejects the subscription model is incredibly refreshing. Congrats on the 3.0 launch!

Great update! The five stations I listen to look much more at home in Eter now.

Glad to hear that. You can share stations too. It works very cool when you file the link.

If I had anyone to share them with I would. I also appreciated the cashculator MCP update. It happened at the same time as I injured myself in a bike accident and could practically only use VTT with Claude in Obsidian. Typing a few numbers wasn’t the most demanding thing I had to do, but it was one less because of the MCP.

Hello! It's nice to see updates and improvements in this app. I bought lifetime in v2.0 I think. The problem is that since the first version, it still does not have a folder system. Something that I find VERY USEFUL. That is, being able to have my stations and being able to organize them in folders. Folder 1: "Information" Folder 2: "Music" etc... I asked for it in v1 but it seems that it is not a priority 😞 Greetings! 😄

We believe that it should now be easier to do in the grid system. We know it’s a common request.

If you implement this feature, I would find it incredibly essential and very useful. For example, a very powerful app is "Broadscasts" and that app does what I'm telling you. Anyway, anyway, keep working because the app is very good 😄 💚

Congrats!! One-time universal purchase, no subscription, I'm gonna cry. May I ask, what's the difference between your app and Apple Podcast? I mean Apple Podcast also has the station feature. I'm a newbie to radio stations :/

u/grayprog楼主回复

I didn’t even know that Apple Podcast has internet radio. I thought it only had podcasts. Apple Music can play radio stations. But being not a dedicated or fast app it lacks the convenience and some of it r features like song history, Shazam integration, integration with Spotify and just ease of use, especially in the car.

u/FeedbackCorrect4949回复

sorry for the confusion. I searched the station feature of Podcast and found that it’s totally different from radio receiver (my gosh 😱😱) > integration with spofity You got me! I will definitely give it a shot!

Hi. I just wrote an article about Eter 3 on VVMac Le Blog (www.vvmac.com). Just click on the large grey FLASH! (samedi 9 mai 2026) button on the home page, then search for Eter.

Looks interesting compared to other radio apps I've seen promoted before. What is the long-term vision for supporting the evolution or growth of the app? Is it only US-based or also international?

u/grayprog楼主回复

Thank you. We constantly improve the app, without bloating it. It's already quite feature-rich but we have things in the backlog. It's not US-only and never was. We're an international indie company, split between Canada, Poland and the US. Eter has stations from all over the world and you can add any station stream if you have the URL. Eter's UI is also localized in English, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian.

I see why this is better than big corporate cross-platform apps like iHeart or TuneIn, but what sets you apart from Triode or Broadcasts, which are in the same “for Apple users who want Apple-like apps” category?

u/grayprog楼主回复

Triode and Broadcasts are good radio apps from esteemed Apple developers. I think they there are a few ways which make Eter better. Perhaps starting with the price and the amount of updates we’re doing. I also think that our implementation of Shazam is better than Broadcast’s. Same for our database of stations. The approaches to finding stations is different. I’m not sure if any of them support opening songs in Apple Music or spotify. On the Mac we have two interfaces (mini and full). We also certainly release updates more often than Triode. We also like the interface feel of our app better. This is obviously subjective. You should try all and decide which one works better for you.

funny, suddenly radio apps popup everywhere. must have missed the 1.0 aera

u/grayprog楼主回复

What do you call 1.0 era? This app is five years old now but yes, there are many.

u/beyondbase

Do screensavers not work/activate when Eter is playing on AppleTV?

u/grayprog楼主回复

I’m not sure really. I didn’t pay attention to this since I don’t want the screensaver. But should it even? It’s showing artwork and plays music. Why should it show screensaver? Does playing Apple Music allow the screensaver?

u/beyondbase回复

Apple Music and Podcasts allow audio to play in the background while a screensaver goes. There's a toggle to turn it on/off in Settings, but I'm unsure if that's a feature locked to first-party apps. Besides the ambient benefit of having something more interesting to glance at when primarily listening to music through a sound system connected to a TV, a screensaver also means it's not left on a static UI which increases image retention/burn-in on OLED and Plasma displays.

u/thejustinj

This is great! I just downloaded it and tried it for the first time. I love how you click on a radio station and instantly hear the audio (there's no delay at all). Was able to find a bunch of Canadian radio stations (in multiple cities) that I like.
