Suggestions for Notch apps

I developed Folder Hub, which is like a hidden file drawer under the notch, allowing you to conveniently access files.

I've been using droppy for a while, it meets all my needs! The developer is also very nice

Same boat, Alcove never really clicked for me either. I've been using Droppy for a while, it's solid for the file drop/quick access part (drag stuff in, grab it later straight from the notch) and it's got a decent music player too. Downside for your list: no Obsidian daily notes support and no Things 3/reminders linking that I've found, so you'd still need something else for that side. Worth trying alongside whatever covers the calendar piece.

I also made a Notch app, but my focus is mainly on file transfer and quick launching. I didn’t add a music player because I think controlling music in native apps like Apple Music feels better. There’s no need to put everything into the Notch just to add more features. Do you think music controls in the Notch are actually more convenient?

I wouldn’t say that music controls in the notch are MORE convenient, but rather that they are quite a convenient option. I generally control my music with the media buttons on my keyboard, but sometimes my hand is on the mouse and it’s just quicker to zip up and tap a pause button in my notch app. I’ve been using Droppy as my notch app lately and it is EXCELLENT. Modular, so you can make it function as you like without getting bloated. The music controls in Droppy work quite well (although a recent update made it so it brings my music app to the front after I click a control in Droppy, which is a bit annoying, as the whole point of controlling my music from the notch is to quickly change my music while staying in the program I’m currently working in; otherwise I’d just ctrl-tab over to my music app. Droppy used to behave in the more useful way, you’d click pause or whatever in the notch and the music would pause without switching apps.) One thing I’d LOVE to see in a notch app is an always-on display of my currently playing song title and artist. Even in tiny text, it would be so useful to be able to glance up and see what I’m listening to. Currently notch apps can show you a brief notification when a new song starts playing, but that always-on display is what I crave. Definitely try Droppy though. It’s awesome.

Speaking of reminders, we actually built a Things 3-like app before because our team needed to share task screenshots for collaboration. We’ve released it now, so everyone can use it. Your idea of showing to-do items in the Notch is pretty interesting. We’ll look into it.

i would treat the notch as a temporary tray, not a second menu bar. the stuff that works best there is glanceable and short-lived: next event, current music, recent files, maybe one pinned note. i would be careful with reminders/tasks though. if it becomes another place to manage tasks, it starts adding clutter again. for daily notes, a simple open-today shortcut is probably better than trying to render the whole note in the notch.

yeah, that scope makes sense. i'd keep the notch version closer to a glance card than a mini app. for reminders/events, the best default is probably: show the next 1-3 things, let me check off or snooze one item, then get out of the way. if it turns into a full task manager in the notch, it will compete with the menu bar and notification center instead of being useful. file tray is similar: recent/pinned files, quick drop target, maybe one action like copy path or move to a chosen folder. the moment it needs nested folders/search/settings, i'd kick that back to a normal window. Reminders Menubar is a good reference point actually. i'd copy the speed of that, then make the notch part more temporary and glanceable.
