Looking for a type of software
Hello there, I’m looking for a digital asset manager that goes beyond just photos - something that can handle pretty much any file type: DMGs, PDFs, Word docs, images, screenshots, text clippings, and so on. Think Lightroom, but for all your files instead of just a photo library. I came across Eagle and it’s almost exactly what I have in mind, but the lack of an iOS app is a dealbreaker for me. I need something that works on both iOS and macOS. Bonus points if it supports flexible storage options - local, iCloud, or a home NAS would all be ideal. Does anything like this exist? Would love to hear what you’re all using.

devonthink has an ios app and handles every file type you mentioned, pdfs, dmgs, images, text clippings, all of it. have you tried the trial yet?

If iOS is a hard requirement, DEVONthink is probably the first one I would test. It is closer to “Lightroom for everything” than most Mac apps, and DEVONthink To Go is a real iOS client. NeoFinder is also worth checking if cataloging is the main need, but it is not the same cross-device library experience. I would separate two questions before choosing: do you want to import/copy everything into a managed library? or do you want to keep files in normal Finder/iCloud/NAS folders and index/tag them? That choice matters more than the feature list. Managed libraries are cleaner inside the app, but Finder-first workflows are easier to recover from if you ever leave the app.
Thank you. That part has been back and forth with me. I am more leaning to leaving the files on my NAS. And using the software to reference the files but at the same time having them in managed library also seems like the better option. It sucks. I have an insane amount of files I need to get control over.
MacOS has its own built in tags, have you tried those? Simple finder and iCloud sync

Would help to know the exact workflow but a few guesses based on common requests here. If you need a system-wide text expander with snippets and templates, Espanso is free and open source and runs from a config file. If you need something to automate repetitive UI actions across apps, Keyboard Maestro is the Mac standard and worth every penny. If it is more about organizing reference material you keep needing to paste or pull up, Hook or DEVONthink cover that territory well. What is the specific thing you keep doing manually that you want to eliminate?
Since the iOS app is your dealbreaker with Eagle, take a serious look at DEVONthink plus DEVONthink To Go. It is basically "Lightroom for everything", it ingests any file type (DMGs, PDFs, Word, images, screenshots, web clippings, plain text snippets), and the iOS app is a real first-class client with sync, not just a viewer. It is not the prettiest UI, but for handling literally any file across Mac and iPhone/iPad it is the most capable thing I have used. Billfish and Pixa are nice but Mac-only, so they would hit the same wall Eagle did for you.
If iOS is a hard requirement, I would stop looking at Eagle for this one. I use Eagle a lot for design references and mixed asset libraries, and it does handle way more than photos - PDFs, Office files, AI/PSD/SVG, videos, fonts, etc. It can also live in a synced folder or NAS setup if you are careful about the library sync. But it is still a desktop-first DAM. For your exact list, DEVONthink is probably the first trial I would run since it has iOS/macOS and is built around weird mixed document libraries. NeoFinder is also worth checking if cataloging/searching external drives or NAS is the bigger need, though it feels less like a Lightroom-style working library imo. Finder tags + iCloud works if the library stays small, but it gets messy once you want previews, notes, and actual browsing across lots of file types. That is where the dedicated apps earn their keep.

Here are the apps that I use regularly for managing files on my mac and iOS devices — I have been using Dropbox for syncing all my files across my Macs and iOS devices. Works like a charm. The UX for the dropbox mobile app is also really good. The iCloud Files app is also decent. I occasionally use the Files app to store and retrieve files between the devices. Recently, I also have been using GitHub as a file asset manager. Works neatly. It is free also. The pain is the setup and for larger files, there are additional setup. You can create private repos to store files without making it public. I have been using GitHub private repos for storing multiple types of files — for example — recently I have been working on building a font. The font file is synced in a github repo and I access the file using github across multiple macs. Lastly, I also use the native Apple Notes app to save images and PDFs in a Notes folder that are important for me. For example, I have a notes folder called, “Documents for proofs” that has all my IDs and images of important documents — that I can access quickly from any apple device when needed.
paperless-ngx.com/ could be not bad too but not on that he manages the dmg.

Eagle is the closest I’ve found so far. NeoFinder is another.
