CoverMyCamera - One-click software cover for your MacBook camera and mic
I'm the developer of CoverMyCamera. Posting here because I built this for MacBook users who want camera/mic privacy without a plastic shutter. Problem Sticky webcam covers are still the default advice for Mac privacy. Apple has warned they can damage the display when the lid closes. System Settings can revoke camera or mic access, but that is not a fast one-click control you use several times a day. I wanted something simpler: a local menu bar app that blocks the built-in MacBook camera and mutes the mic system-wide, no product telemetry, and fail-open behavior so you are not permanently locked out if the app quits or crashes. I don't find it very useful because of the green camera indicator . I always know when it's on. and as someone said in the comments - if a hacker is good enough to bypass this camera indicator - he'll easily bypass your software. Best of luck!
I think this is mostly to avoid accidental cases. I had this problem myself and I just bound the f5 key (originally for dictation) to a karabiner script for muting my mic. Gonna take a look at how this app turns off the camera and create another script for binding shift f5 to camera lol
The hardware LED can’t be bypassed; it is hardwired to the camera somehow. I’m not sure about the on-screen one
As others have mentioned, the LED light is directly linked to the camera hardware , so you know if your camera is active. I don’t personally see the need for much more than that. Software like this is just introducing more complexity and attack surface . Also, $13 for this is far too high IMO. This should be no more than a couple bucks, I don’t see the value prop at all beyond that.
I like the idea but one potential problem is of trust. It's not about the app but the system itself. When it comes to privacy, software can be tricked and bypassed, relatively easily. When you put a tape or a physical cover over the camera, it's a different story. Don't mean to dampen your launch but I think genuine feedback can sometimes save a lot of pain down the road.
I was thinking the same thing. Camera light is on when in use. If a hacker can disable that, they can probably disable OP’s software. I honestly don’t see the market for this.
Same honest answer: if the LED already solves it for you, there’s probably no market for you, and that’s fine. The people this is for usually want (1) prevent access before anything turns on, (2) mic mute in the same click, (3) no plastic shutter. Not everyone wants that, and I’m not arguing the LED is fake.
This is the best critique in the thread, and I agree with it. If your standard is “I only trust something optically blocking the lens,” tape/cover wins. Software can always be bypassed by something with enough privilege. CoverMyCamera is for people who want fast, reversible, local control (camera + mic) without adhesive on the display — Apple has warned physical covers can damage the screen when the lid closes. Different trust model, not a better one for every person. Appreciate you saying it constructively.
Just so you know, the green LED on a MacBook is hardwired directly to the camera sensor. It’s a physical hardware connection, meaning hackers can't bypass it. If the camera is active, the LED must light up. Because of this, I'm a bit skeptical about how your software actually works.
My hardware cover is cheaper than software cover - and more effective
The problem is apple has warned countless times against macbook covers since the camera and the trackpad sit very tightly together any cover could damage the screen in multiple ways this app gives you the exact benefits of a camera cover without the risk.
I get the idea behind protecting camera access, but iOS already shows the little green indicator when the camera is in use.
i rather use whiteboard marker to draw on my camera and remove it whenever i want to use the camera, keep your app to yourself
Totally valid. If marker/tape works for you, stick with it. This is for people who want software on/off + mic mute without putting anything on the camera.
Most of the pushback here is about security, and it is fair. The green LED is wired to the camera, so software cannot hide an active camera from you. But I think that framing is what is sinking the thread, because tape was never going to lose the stop-a-hacker job to an app. Where something like this actually earns a spot is the boring accidental stuff. Jumping off one call into another with the mic still hot, or the camera waking up in an app you did not expect. A single key that kills mic and camera is handy for that, same reason people bind a mute key in Karabiner. If you leaned the whole pitch there, convenience and not embarrassing yourself on a call, you would stop inviting the tape comparison you cannot win. Two honest snags. Thirteen dollars feels steep when the thing everyone pictures instead is free tape, so that convenience story has to carry a lot. And fail-open is the right choice so you never lock yourself out, but it does mean this is a soft convenience layer rather than a hard block, and I would say that plainly. Pitch it as what it is and it has a lane.
12$ seems steep for software that can be solve with a cheaper hardware solution in place. I think maybe lowering it might help
Waste of money. No evidence whatsoever someone can toggle the camera or mic without triggering the indicators. And you have to give it permission to install a system level app? $12. Hahahaha.
There is a 24 hour free trial you can check out the app for yourself and verify it blocks apps from accessing your camera fully.

Honestly there was a time i think this would have been very useful. Sadly like others have indicated, the indicator light pretty much solves this. Would have really appreciated this back when i'd just use tapes to cover camera. Kudos for the idea though
