Scap v1.4 is out! – A macOS Native Screenshot, Annotation & Whiteboard Tool

The pricing paragraph is the only part that makes me hesitate: “almost completely free” plus three paid options leaves me unsure what is actually locked. Naming the one or two paid features directly would make this much easier to evaluate. The comparison section is clear, but the purchase boundary should be just as clear.
Feel free to download and use it for free. Just close the payment popup if it appears to keep using the app. You can make a voluntary payment if you find it useful, which is essentially a donation.
The layers are the interesting part for me. Can a board be saved and reopened with the text, arrows and imported images still editable, or is the final image flattened? That decides whether it works as a real whiteboard rather than just a screenshot editor.
Will be added in the next version. Canvas layers are already built-in. I'll implement .scap project files for re-editing later.

Yep, pinch-to-zoom is available, and you can also zoom in/out with the mouse scroll wheel.
This looks like an interesting direction. I like that you're not trying to compete directly with CleanShot X or Shottr on capture workflows, but instead focusing on what happens after the screenshot is taken. The annotation tools, layers, QR codes, and customizable backgrounds make it feel more like a lightweight design tool than just a screenshot utility. One question: do you have any plans to add OCR or AI-powered features in the future, or do you want to keep Scap focused on fast, privacy-friendly local editing?
OCR text recognition is already available in the status bar menu. AI features may support API integration in the future, though there are no concrete plans for it right now. I’m a long-term maintainer of this app.
The Shottr comparison is the one I can speak to, since capture-to-clipboard is a reflex for me at this point, several dozen times a day, no thinking involved. What made Shottr stick wasn't a feature, it was getting that specific path down to basically zero friction. Scap's pitch reads like a different job though: building something (a whiteboard, an annotated doc) rather than grabbing something to paste. Both start with a screenshot, but they're really two different moments. Does the fast path still stay one step, capture straight to clipboard, or does going into the drawing board add a stage even when you just want the quick copy?
two people have now asked which features are actually paid and the answer is still "just close the popup". either they're rarely used and this is a donation, or they're worth $19.99 and they deserve a name on the page. right now it's both at once, and that's the only unclear part of an otherwise very clear post. also $19.99 lifetime against $4.99 a year is basically telling everyone to take the annual.
one regression case i'd add for image import: drag in a Display P3 image plus a PNG with transparency, resize and rotate both, then compare copy-to-clipboard with the saved export in Preview. screenshot editors can look correct on the canvas but silently shift color, drop alpha, or rasterize imported layers at the displayed size. i'd also repeat it once with the source file renamed or moved after import, just to confirm the board is not holding a fragile external reference.
Thanks a lot for such detailed and professional test cases. You’ve pointed out two easily overlooked hidden bugs for whiteboard tools. I will add all these regression tests in the next update to guarantee correct color gamut display, preserved alpha transparency, and embed all images directly into the .scap project file without relying on fragile external file references.
