Can someone make a better settings app.

RT. Tired of the settings app being slow, buggy, and what not. Mainly looking for managing privacy&security permissions for apps, don't care about iCloud and stuff like that.

Not an answer to what you ask for, but maybe of help: if you keep the System Settings in your dock and right-click on it, you'll see all main settings. Maybe navigating goes easier this way.

I don't know why this goes overlooked so often...I hadn't even noticed it myself until someone pointed it out, but in System Settings there is a search field. (Top left.) It's fairly smart too. It's a surprisingly fast and easy way to find any setting you are looking for, no matter how buried it is.

You can also search for the setting you want in spotlight and just open it from there

I second this, can prove to be very handy for some people.

You can also find all the panes in Spotlight.

Nice tip, never realized that. I often go to Displays (like to downsize resolution when doing a screen recording for example).

Perhaps it is slow for you but, realistically, how often are you in there? I use it occasionally but the most is only when setting up a new computer.

Do you think Apple would allow a custom settings app to have all the deeplinks available?

u/Micromat回复

Definitely not in the App Store. An app like this (if possible at all) will require violating app store policies.

If it ever came to exist even in partial form since all features are not available via entitlements, it would ask for an absurd amount of permissions, definitely never going to be available on the App Store but maybe through other online platforms....

That's true. maybe as a notarized build, though? But in any case I do feel the OP because I had my fair share of issues with the settings app as well. Sometimes it is also simply not responsive or does not even open up at all.

This is locked down by macOS Apps can’t change permissions for other apps. There’s no API for it. The best a 3rd party app could do is send you to the right settings page. If it was possible, any sketchy app could just give itself full access without asking!

I dont think its possible to build one because apple wont allow a custom settings app to have all the deeplinks and hyperlinks. i have found one better alternative for Finder i.e. Bloom but i dont think it will go as smooth as finder replacement for settings app

I understand. i also often can't find what i am looking for. I am not sure if it is possible to overtake it as per apple strict policies. What kind of layout would you prefer that would make it easier for you to get to where you want? grid? tabs?

You can use: Shortcuts, Automator, and / or Terminal. If you can describe exactly what you want, you can build your own Script or Shortcut

I use an Alfred workflow that a gives me text search for most sections and subsections of System Settings.

Another nit I have with all of apple's settings apps is the search. For some reason it never brings up with anything i search verbatim its so annoying...

I hear you and i miss the old seetings. Not because they where better, but because i learned them over the years.
