[OS] Why I Replaced Jettison with Ejectify After 15 Years
In trying to be open-minded, I recently agreed to try Ejectify (€6,99), an app that performs a task for which I already had a solution: to automatically eject external disks from my Mac before it goes to sleep and to remount them when it wakes. I worked off a MacBook for a long, long time, and I needed a way to just shut it, unplug, and move on without getting nagged to death about thumb drives and external volumes. I've been using Jettison ($6.95) to do that since I saw it in Macworld in 2011. The developer, St. Clair Software, also makes Default Folder X, History Hound, and App Tamer, all good apps in their own right. The reason I opted to try Ejectify is that it ticks some boxes that are pretty important in 2026. It's open source and on Github, meaning you can essentially get it for free if you have the chops to build it. You can also see how the developer, Niels Mouthaan, responds to issues, both in troubleshooting and in planning for additional features. I've used other apps from Niels, and he has provided me with good support. Aside from philosophical differences with Jettison, there are also some features added by using Ejectify. Volumes are managed individually, not as one size fits all, so you have more control. Provides a way to force unmount a disk on a case-by-case basis. Allows you to mute "Disks Not Ejected Properly" messages if you and macOS can't reach an agreement on what that means. The full Ejectify feature set (from the website): Helps prevent "Disk Not Ejected Properly" notifications after wake. Helps reduce the risk of data loss or corrupted volumes by safely unmounting them first. Lets you choose which supported volumes Ejectify manages, including external volumes, ejectable internal volumes, and disk images. Supports automatic unmounting when the display turns off or the system starts sleeping, then attempts to mount volumes again after wake. Includes force unmount, force mute notifications, and instant "Unmount all" actions, plus a global keyboard shortcut for manual unmount-all.

Your long-term switch reports are always worth reading. 15 years with Jettison is impressive. Ejectify's per-volume rules solved my exact problem with a NAS drive. Have you seen any difference in wake-from-sleep remount times or reliability with a mix of USB and Thunderbolt devices?

That's great. I asked because I used to get occasional delayed remounts with my Thunderbolt dock + NAS combo on Jettison. I switched to Ejectify a few months ago - the per-volume rules are great, but wake times feel a little slow when I have more than 4 drives.

Hey Niels, one question, does Ejectify support a sort of reverse feature which is to select and protect volumes from ejecting ? I’ve been working on an app for that use case but don’t know if yours support this exactly opposite use case.
Niels, is the app supposed to let me know that the disk was successfully ejected? I have a stubborn disk that doesn't like to eject using Jettison or Finder until I kill some processes. I had hopes that elevated permissions on Ejectify would take care of this for me but... apparently not. I would expect to see some sort of failure notice. Worse, when I simply uncheck the menu item for my disk the check goes away, which could lead me to think it was ejected, when in fact finder tells me it wasn't. Jettison will at least tell me which processes are preventing the disk from ejecting making it easier to kill them with terminal. For now Jettison is the better app for my use case.
There's a related feature request (notifications; see issue 125 om GitHub) but since Ejectify is all about preventing notifications, I'm not a fan of introducing notifications in Ejectify itself. Ejectify logs troubleshooting-related info via system logs, helping to diagnose why a volume cannot be (un)mounted but to keep things simple I decided not to make this directly visible from the main UI. Jettison is great too, so if that works better for your use case, all good!
the per-volume control is the thing that always bugged me about Jettison. I have a NAS that I never want auto-ejected but a USB drive that I always do. having to treat them the same was annoying. switching to Ejectify for exactly this reason a few months ago and haven't looked back.

Great timing, I'm actually working on an app that does the exact opposite of ejectify, mountain and others; which is for desktop macs and macbooks with always plugged in external storage (to stop ejecting the volumes). I want to learn if any of the apps you're using or have tested also has this case covered? And, also if you could share your experience of using these apps with external HDDs vs SSDs vs NVMe drives; is there different in the user experience and how easily the mounts are resolved in wake-sleep cycles.
The per-volume control is what Jettison should have added years ago. I have a Time Machine drive that I never want auto-ejected but USB sticks that should always unmount on sleep. One-size-fits-all doesn't work when you have mixed setups. Being open source is a nice bonus too. Always makes me more comfortable with something that hooks into disk mounting.
I always find it interesting how many tiny utility apps exist just to fix one annoyance in macOS. Fifteen years with one app is a pretty strong endorsement though. If something finally made you switch after that long, I am curious what the day to day differences actually felt like because convenience apps live or die by tiny details.
The per-volume control is the real shift. Treating a Time Machine or NAS the same as a thumb drive is what made the old auto-eject-everything approach feel risky. Lets you keep aggressive ejection for cheap USBs while leaving long-lived drives mounted. €6.99 once is also fair pricing for a single-purpose utility.
I always keep my MacBook Air connected to my USB hub, which connects to a monitor, mouse, keyboard, hard drive, and SSD. The Mac lid is always closed. In this setup, how does the “Ejectify” work?
