Shiori - A bookmark manager that lives in your menu bar. Fully cloud synced across your devices, keyboard-driven, accessible on multiple platforms.
Hey everybody! We recently released v1.0.0 of our bookmark manager called Shiori. Shiori lives in your menu bar, fully keyboard driven, called with a hot key and saves URLs in seconds, keeping them fully accessible throughout your devices with cloud sync, a web dashboard and plans to reach more platforms such as mobile, browser extensions and more in the future. The funny thing about Shiori is it was a feature request for our other app. After we created it as a widget (and went so much over board of the initial intention, oopsy daisy 😄), we decided to launch it as an app of it's own. In the video you can see me launching URLs, and they are directed to the specific browser profile I routed them to (with tag-based routing), using Link Groups to open multiple URLs at once and navigating the UI Core Features - Bookmarks are fully synced between devices, one license covers unlimited devices. - Tag-based browser routing - open tagged bookmarks on specific Google Chrome profiles (Beta is only for Google Chrome but will be extended to support more browsers). - Link Groups - Launch a group of URLs at once, with a single click. - Keyboard-driven access through the menu bar. Quick search bookmarks by URL, title, description or tag. Comparison Shiori was inspired by BarMarks which is a beautiful bookmark manager that I bought some time ago. When I received the feature request for a keyboard-driven bookmark widget, I immediately thought about BarMarks, I am not sure the app is still maintained as I stopped using it It is maintained. Other than that there are some absolute units of bookmark managers out there such as Raindrop (which is amazing, no introduction needed), the difference is the pricing model which brings me to... Pricing TL;DR: Shiori is a one-time payment, currently on launch price sale of €34.99, price will increase to €49.99 by mid June. To be fully transparent - Shiori started as a monthly subscription app due to the fact it has a backend with cloud sync, a web UI and soon enough we'll add 2GB file storage, API access and more. All of that incur ongoing charges. From a business perspective, running all that on a one-time payment model is pretty... stupid. However, subscriptions are painfully annoying, and we decided to take the risk and change it to lifetime. All subscription users have been converted to lifetime (shout out to all beautiful 6 of you believers ❤️), and we plan to keep it that way. I'll mention that MAYBE, in the future we'll add an optional plan with AI auto-tagging -- that's definitely not going to be a one-time payment 😅, and we'll probably include a BYOK option for users who prefer to use their own keys, and not pay a subscription. EDIT: Thanks to u/A_Drop_of_Colour for confirming BarMarks is still actively maintained, and the dev is responsive!

BarMarks is absolutely still being maintained and the dev is supper responsive. They respond to email very quickly and have added every feature I have suggested or fixed any issue reported. It's not hard to check if an app is still being active maintained if you're going to use it an example for a very similar app.

Glad to see an app I'd be inclined to use as a keyboard-centric user! Is there a way to choose which browser a link opens in if I want to change that? E.g. perhaps by holding a modifier for a secondary browser?
Thank you! Currently the routing feature is very early and simple, it is chrome only and only supports simple routing, which is tag-based. There's an option to launch untagged bookmark to the browser you're focused on (which is my default). In the future I plan to add more browsers support and more ways to control where bookmarks will open 😄
When I played the video, I thought to myself : "Great, an update for BarMarks that I bought !", but no...
And BarMarks gets regularly updated and the dev is super responsive. Seems weirdly passive aggressive to imply BarMarks might no longer be maintained while "inspired" does a lot of heavy lifting. I have absolutely no stake in this comparison (BarMarks is not the only app of it's kind) but the description rubbed me the wrong way.

What platforms will be supported. And if I work in a place where I can't install the app, will I then be able to use a plugin in Chrome ?
I'm still looking at good bookmark synchronization tool. I'm not sure if this is it, but I'm going to check it out what it can do.
This is so awesome! Most apps aren't designed for keyboard-centric users, so I would love this.
Does it work with different browsers? I use different versions depending on what kind of work I am doing, it would be great to be able to pick.
If you're talking about routing, currently in this v1.0 release it only supports chrome. Generally the bookmark simply opens on the browser you're focused on unless it has routing which takes priority over simple focus. My default browser is Google Chrome but I just tested with Safari to confirm, it opened the bookmark in Safari. In the future it'll also be able to route to different profiles across different browsers 😄
I have a slightly more basic question: what is the workflow where a dedicated bookmark manager becomes clearly better than the browser address bar? I ask because I almost never use bookmarks seriously. Most of the time, typing a few letters into the browser address bar finds either the page from history or the saved bookmark fast enough that I don't feel much friction. So I'm trying to understand the real usage pattern here. Is the value mostly: keeping links independent from one browser/profile syncing across Mac/iOS/browser extensions tagging things that are not easy to remember by title/URL opening groups of links for a specific workflow routing links into the right browser profile The routing and link groups part makes sense to me. That feels less like "better bookmarks" and more like a small launcher for web-based work. I'm curious how people who already use bookmark managers heavily think about this. What problem did it solve that history search/address-bar autocomplete did not?
Hey there, first of all thanks for the detailed interest! I'll explain how I use it I use 3 different Macs and so the url search bar doesn't necessarily have the URL I need if I only opened it on another Mac. A lot of the time I want to download my apps beta versions and so I just search for that link and it downloads quickly. Another use case I have is that a lot of the time I'll copy links to send to others for for example beta download for beta testers, production download link for support tickets, links to resources such as docs, or youtube video guides. The alternative would be to open youtube and search for a video guide and then copy its URL. By keeping it handy, I am always ready and that saves me time. I use multiple profiles, I could be working with 3-4 google chrome profiles at a time, but most of the time I work with 2 (one personal and another app specific profile), by sending links to the specific profile I need, I save time where previously I had to copy the link from one browser to another if it opened in the wrong one. Also that keeps downloads in their designated browsers (again, that's something I do a lot) which helps me stay organized. As for organization -- my method is pretty much - f*** organization 😂 I just tag and put everything in one place, I write very fast and so the search bar is more than enough for me to find what I need, being a keyboard heavy user, I can open, copy, tag or edit URLs without touching the mouse, more seconds saved, but that adds up. If I had to choose two things "I can't live without" about Shiori, is cloud sync and keyboard navigation, the rest is just quality of life.

Hey there, That's a simple question that could mean multiple things so I'll answer with extra details I am a developer and I am using AI tools. In my book, that's not vibe coding, simply utilizing tools. Software engineering for production apps require a lot more than simple code. The biggie is the architecture, understanding what the code needs to do, in order to lead the AI to the correct execution, and of course experience helps with the small quirks that save time (This is our fourth macOS app and we are very close to 2000 active users). I'll leave the decision to you whether that's acceptable or not 😄

It cannot access Chrome's existing bookmarks by itself, but you can simply export and import them into the app, takes less than 2 minutes.
Looks very nice. How about long forgotten bookmarks? I am type of user that keeps pilling bookmarks, because everything seems interesting. For later 🤣 Do you think your app can help (in some future update if not now), by reminding that something is unread, for X amount of days/months/years? Maybe proposal to remove if criteria is met.
Hey there, thank you! Shiori is not exactly a read it later kind of bookmark manager, but who knows? All our apps roadmaps are dictated by user requests lol, who am I to say no 😂 About the criteria, that’s a possibility, I can add a last accessed criteria and then let the users set up a threshold before the bookmarks gets deleted. As I am writing this I figured I might need to alert the user which could satisfy the first part you asked for. Great idea, thank you! 😁
