Protego for Reddit v3 is live! I deleted the Reddit app two years ago and built the Safari extension I wanted instead. Take control of your Reddit feed!

getprotego.app | App Store Hey everyone! I'm Edgar, I work on Protego for Reddit on nights and weekends, and version 3 landed this week! It's a Safari extension with a companion Mac app that filters Reddit's website and strips out the clutter that Reddit won't let you turn off. Problem: A couple of years ago Reddit stopped being fun for me. I'm here for photography, fitness and tech, and video games, and every feed around the 2024 election turned into politics and drama. I'd open it and would end up doom scrolling content that I didnt even enjoy. So I deleted the Reddit app and blocked the website. I didn't want to quit Reddit though, I wanted a quieter version of it, and that can only be done in the browser since Reddit killed my favorite Reddit client app, Apollo. The Reddit app decides what you see and gives you almost no say in it. A web page arrives in Safari and an extension gets to change it before it reaches you. I still stay informed about politics through Reddit and other online sources but I want the choice to limit how much of it I'm exposed to. Protego for Reddit can be accessed from the Safari toolbar What it does Filters posts by keyword, community, individual user, or link domain, with wildcards and groups you can switch off together. Transforms your browsing by hiding thumbnails, avatars, flair, badges, vote controls, join buttons, banners, recommendations, Reddit Answers (AI) and login nudges. Limits your own access, which puts Reddit itself out of reach in stages and can arm itself with an Apple Focus like Sleep or Study. Redirects to old.reddit.com automatically if that's your preference, with auto media expand and endless feed included. No account, no tracking. Lists sync through your own iCloud. Protego for Reddit can filter posts and hide visual clutter The part I use every day Limits has a step that blocks the feeds but still lets a direct link to a post open. Home, popular and news are gone, so there's nothing to fall into, but when I'm working and a search result points at a Reddit thread, that thread still loads. I read the answer and I'm out. That one setting did more for my focus than deleting the app ever did. Protego for Reddit can limit access so you can browse with intention Comparison: RES is what most people reach for and it's the reason I started, but there's no Safari version any more and it hasn't had active development in a long time. Protego is Safari native, works on new and old Reddit, and syncs to my phone. Pricing: $1.99 one time purchase for the next week (normally $2.99). One purchase covers iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro. No subscription. getprotego.app | App Store Happy to answer any questions!

One feature that would make complex filters much easier to trust is a temporary reveal mode. When a post disappears, users should be able to show hidden items for the current page and see the exact keyword, domain, user, or group that matched. With wildcards and synced rule groups, a small typo can otherwise look like Reddit failed to load something. A per page activity count and one click undo for the last rule change would make troubleshooting much less frustrating.

I've had about 2-3 people suggest this over the past few months! I've been brainstorming how to implement this in a way that'd be useful. I'm gonna brainstorm a bit more and may reach out to you for feedback. I've saved your username in my notes so i don't forget! Thanks for the suggestion!

the direct-link-still-loads detail is the smart part. most blockers just nuke the whole domain, so when someone actually sends you a reddit link you can't open it either. Freedom and Cold Turkey both have that problem. glad someone finally separated blocking the feed from blocking the site.

Agreed, that was my problem. I'd block Reddit completely during work hours but then when researching some programming related topic i'd would inevitably end up with a Reddit link i couldnt open. Which meant i had to disable the Reddit blocking and would usually end up getting sucked back in. Even better, Protego's Limits tie into Apple Focus so it can automatically enable and disable with your Work Focus, Study Focus, etc. I have my Work Focus set up to be enabled from 9am-12pm and 1pm-5:30pm which means i can actually use Reddit during my lunch hour without having to change the setting manually, the moment the clock hits 1pm, i get the block page as intended.

bought it on the phone, appreciate the hiding of reddit ads.

What the heck 😦 thanks for letting me know! Does it show any more information as to why if you tap on that notification? There's nothing weird going on, it's an Astro static site hosted on Cloudflare Pages.

Chatting with NordVPN support now to see if they can run a fresh scan of the site and whitelist it. I'm probably getting blocked due to shared IP addresses on cloudflare.

Which are the differences with respect to “Sink it” App?

Thank you! It's been a LOT of work, lots of late nights, and lots of caffeine so every compliment goes a long way lol.

Just bought this and so far so good! Thank you! I really miss Apollo as well!

I am interested, but have some concerns: Does it block ads? (And if yes, will it cause any problems?) Does it support saving photos / videos? Given Reddit’s API pricing, will there be any limitations when using this app? (Say, only a limited number of posts can be accessed each day) Do you plan to support this app in the long run? Since this is a one-time purchase, is this sustainable?

u/Edg-R楼主回复

Definitely, blocking ads on Reddit was one of the main reasons I made this app, aside from the filtering itself. And no, i've been using Protego for 100% of my own Reddit browsing and I have never experienced any problems. It does not... but that's because nobody had asked for that functionality before. If that's something you're interested in I can research it and see if I can implement it! Protego is a browser extension for Safari so it does not use Reddit's API at all. It simply takes effect on the content within the browser. Yup! I started work on this app back in October 2024 and as of today, July 2026 I've still been supporting it 100%. I built Protego primarily for myself so I will continue supporting it and improving it in the long run! There are no costs for me aside from my Apple dev account, the long nights i spend working on Protego, and some minor costs with the website/hosting. So yes, definitely sustainable! Let me know if you have any other concerns and thank you for the comment!

While I feel like there’s value in this, esp at that non-greedy price; I personally just cannot get over the UI and esp that purple gradient that I see everywhere.. im not accusing the dev of slop just because of the UI but figured id share my 2 cents respectfully cause im sure that adds to the hesitance of a given customer. Good luck

Eh... I agree to an extent but the purple color has been my branding for Protego since I starting working on it before vibecoding became mainstream. I actually paused on the design multiple times and considered switching to a different color. But I didnt feel like I needed to change my branding just because the internet decided purple was associated with AI slop (though it OFTEN is!). At the end of the day Protego shares its name with a magical spell from Harry Potter, and purple is often associated with magic so I leaned into it. I'll let the app's features itself speak to its quality despite the color scheme. 😃 Maybe I'll add an update that allows the user to customize the color scheme 😜

I've been using the app for a while to make reddit usable and love it. The new update looks great!

Great. Works on the macOS. Wish it could work on the reddit app. I am sure there are limitations when it comes to that. I mainly use reddit on the macOS so it works for me.

Thanks! Yeah unfortunately it's not possible at all for one app to modify the functionality of another app. The next best thing is using Reddit through safari even on mobile, which is actually much more pleasant with Protego. Thank you for the support!
