1000 downloads in 1 hour?!
My free app NeverNap was downloaded 1000 times in one hour yesterday. All in Australia. Is it possible to find out who or what is behind this? Or could this be a glitch in App Store Connect? Or perhaps an administrator rolling out the app within a large company?

When an institution (e.g. a school) downloads your app on their devices, they need to register "licenses" for it first. They have an input field to say how many licenses for your app they need. For free apps, people often just input some high number like 1000 or so because it doesn't cost anything anyway. That's why you see 1000 units in that time frame. It's not for 1000 downloads, it's just 1000 registered licenses for maybe 10-20 devices in that institution. I was confused about this as well at first. It's quite annoying because it distorts the app statistics so much.

1000 registered licenses for 10-20 devices, why would anyone do this? Why not just 10-20 or let's say 50 as an upper ballpark?
Because it doesn’t cost anything and you won’t have to even think about if you will have enough in the future. I once participated in an MDM training for setting up multiple iPads in a school and they explicitly advised us to just enter a really high number.
seem crazy to me, but I guess this makes it set and forget for the org. It is such a pain to change these things with the IT department.

The specific mechanism is Apple Business Manager / Apple School Manager bulk-acquiring licenses through Apps and Books. Works even for free apps, though the institution has to have a payment method on file even when it costs nothing. Easy way to sanity check which it is: in App Store Connect, compare App Analytics vs Sales and Trends. Sales and Trends shows units acquired (that 1000 spike). App Analytics shows active devices and sessions, which will be a handful of real users. If your AU session count is well under 1000, that's your confirmation it's institutional pre-staging, not a bot.

If your app is being distributed via MDM then the company/school will purchase them in Apple Business (formerly ABM (Apple Business Manager)) and then use something like Intune or Mosyle or Jamf to deploy them to their users/students. If your app is free then it costs them nothing to “buy” 1000 licenses to distribute them. That’s easier than trying to match exact numbers and maintain.
