Shopify: How to reuse variant images across sizes + show only selected variant images?

Hi everyone, I’m working on a Shopify store where each product has: Age variants (0–6 months, 6–12 months, 1–2 years, etc.) Under each age, I have 8 style variants: Round neck / Collar neck Short sleeve / Long sleeve With pant / With shorts My challenges: 1. Reusing same variant images across age groups I uploaded 8 images for one age group (based on style combinations), but I want to reuse the same 8 images for all other age variants. Right now, I have to manually upload/select images again for each age group 😓 And I have ~27 products, so this is becoming very time-consuming. 👉 Is there a way to: Assign images based only on style (not age)? Or bulk apply the same variant images across all sizes/age groups? 2. Showing variant-specific images on frontend On the product page, I want: When user selects: Round neck + Short sleeve → show only that variant’s images Also show a size chart image on all products 👉 Basically: Dynamic image switching based on selected variant combination Not showing all images, only relevant ones

Hi, I’d avoid treating age and style as equal for media if the image only changes by style. The clean setup is a style-to-image mapping, then age/size variants inherit that media instead of duplicating it. For the frontend, you’ll likely need variant-gallery filtering so only the selected combination stays visible. Since you have 27 products, I’d solve this as a reusable rule/template, not product-by-product edits.

What I've seen most people do for this is split the product into multiple products then use an app or theme edits to merge the products in the frontend on the PDP. Shopify tested a feature called Combined Products a while back, but sellers using it tell me it isn't well-supported. You could also sort of solve this by making a variant metafield for your product images and setting up a Flow to keep the images in sync between the right variants, but I haven't seen that done yet. Woul love to hear what solution you end up rolling with once you figure it out (clients often ask me).
This is something most Shopify stores run into once products start offering multiple options, such as size and style. Shopify treats every variant combination separately, so image management quickly becomes repetitive. The cleaner approach is to separate what controls visuals from what controls selection. Style should drive images, while age or size mainly handles fit and inventory. Since your images stay the same across age groups, you only need one image set per style combination, and you can reuse it across all sizes instead of reuploading for every variant. Shopify does not support sharing image sets across variant groups natively, so people usually handle this through CSV bulk edits, metafields, or a simple mapping layer that links variants to shared images. On the frontend, most themes can be configured to show only the images for the selected variant combination. For example, selecting Round neck and Short sleeve would display only those images, not the full gallery. The size chart is best kept as a static image or a collapsible section, so it stays visible across all variants. This becomes easier to manage when you are not forcing everything into Shopify’s default structure. Platforms like Kefi Commerce let you define how variants map to images and rules without duplicating setups for every combination, which keeps both the backend and product pages much cleaner as your catalog grows. The main fix here is setting up a clean link between options and visuals. Once that is in place, everything becomes easier to maintain. How are you currently handling this right now, fully manual in Shopify or already using any app or theme logic for variants?
