I would like to find a free or affordable one-time-payment replacement for it. I have used Grammarly in the past and prefer Language Tools, but it's $120 USD every two years. Thank you for your time and your help!

Wow, thank you for that detailed, thoughtful, and thorough reply! I mainly do writing in a few contexts: Email (we use Google Workspace for email) Project management, such as task descriptions and team communications Short-form messaging with others via services like SMS, Slack, Teams, and others I suppose that LT isn't terribly expensive, but I am always trying to be thrifty when it's reasonable and fair to do so. I'm beginning to think so far that LT may still be the right choice for me. <sigh>

I tried refine for few days then bought it. I think it's well worth in my opinion. Haven't had any issues with accuracy yet.
I've had a few accuracy issues, but I write more than most people. The good news is that the dev is active and is already making changes that were suggested recently, so that's very promising.
If it’s used for work, and brings value, and if you can expense it or ask the company to pay it for you, then you have plenty reasons to keep using it.
LanguageTool is hard to fully replace for free but a few angles are worth trying. Grammarly's free tier still catches most common grammar and agreement errors even without premium suggestions. If you mainly write in a browser, the built-in proofreader in Google Docs covers surprisingly well and costs nothing. For offline and privacy-focused use, Harper is open source, runs fully locally with no server calls, and has been improving fast on English grammar. The gap is really in academic and formal writing where LanguageTool's style rules are the actual value, and none of the free alternatives match that specific use case yet. What kind of writing are you mainly doing? That would narrow it down a lot.
Scribens is really good, even with their free tier. Probably cheaper than Grammarly but don’t know about LT.

I tried Harper for a few weeks last year and bounced back to LT. It’s fine in a code editor but felt thin in Mail and Slack
Frankly, I don’t know many good 100% free replacements for LT. But TextWisely or RewriteBar was mentioned pretty often as decent alternatives. They’re more AI/LLM-based writing tools though, so the experience is a bit different from traditional grammar checkers like LT. Might be worth checking if you want rewriting or grammar improvement rather than strict rule-based corrections.
Just FYI for anyone else. Languagetool does not offer a free tier anymore. We have made the difficult decision to limit the use of LanguageTool’s browser extension to Premium users only. The rise of generative AI has made it more challenging to sustainably monetize our offering. A majority of users use our products for free, and the relatively small percentage of Premium subscribers is all that is subsidizing our continuously increasing server costs. To improve our Premium experience and to sustain our business model, we’ll be making the LanguageTool browser extension available exclusively for paying customers. Thus, the Chrome extension will ONLY work if you have a paid subscription. Sad, but it is what it is.
