I used to use an app called Regain to block yTube shorts. Was working well and then I needed to reset my phone. After a couple of months I'm looking to reinstall this app as my scrolling has come back. I try to install the app but it's full of bloat with intro questions to analyse my overall phone usage. What's worse, now I have to pay to block Yt shorts. Just on principle I'm not paying for something to restrict my device however good it is to improve my productivity. So does anyone have any free apps that do the same thing? I've tried other alternatives and I run into a payment subscription screen eventually. Comoditisation of people's addition is so immoral.

I get the frustration. A lot of these apps start free then lock basic features behind subscriptions. Blocking shorts should be a native toggle by now.

Yep. Totally. I need YouTube for work. I just want shorts gone forever. It's like having a pack of smokes in my desk draw.

Huh? I don't really need cross device synchronisation. I think I've missed your point.

I should have said I'm really just thinking about phones. Android specifically

ah that makes sense. android is a different beast for this free options that actually work on android: youtube vanced/revanced - lets you disable shorts entirely in the app settings. free, open source, takes a few mins to install uninstall the youtube app and use it through firefox android + ublock origin with cosmetic filters. clunky but free accessibility apps like minimalist phone or olauncher that hide youtube behind extra taps so impulse opens become impossible revanced is probably your best bet if you want it to feel native. the others are friction-based

unhook is the standard answer for chrome and firefox. free, open source, basically just hides shorts and the homepage feed. installed it a while back and forgot it was there which is kind of the point if u want to make sure an extension isnt sketchy check the github + the permissions on the chrome store page. anything asking for access to all websites when it only needs youtube is a red flag there are some newer chrome ones that add stuff like keyword blocking and pomodoro timers if u want more than just hide-shorts but unhook covers the basics u on chrome or firefox at work

mango for youtube is a safari extension that hides shorts entirely, flat $2 one-time purchase

I watch YouTube through the Firefox app and just grab Firefox extensions that handle it. There are quite a few... I think Unhook is one of the more popular ones?

I use a patched apk through revanced, you can also use morphe, or only use YouTube through your browser with a short blocking browser addon (there's a few of them, they all do pretty much the same thing)

I use Achieve! Earn Your Screen time. Its pretty solid since it blocks any apps you choose until you "earn" your screen time by doing your goals - workouts/studying/work/w.e. I've been on the free plan and been happy with it, might be worth checking out

if you don't find alternative, I rec putting points in Skill: Ignore Whatever At Will for example, late last year - I started getting annoyed at teasers that end with "- let me explain". Probably cause at that time I was obsessive over Hazbin Hotel, and one of the most popular youtubers covering Hazbin stuff uses "let me explain" all the effing time. annoyingly, the allergy developed to a point that I get auto-annoyed when I hear other youtubers use it. (I think moistcritical used it at least once) AND I also started getting annoyed at thread titles that ended with - let me explain now, here's even more bad news - when something annoys us regularly - suddenly - it seems to be everywhere because our attention got trained to notice it more thankfully, before it could develop into a rage trigger, I remembered that I could control how I reacted to annoying things. I knew all I had to do was immediately CALM myself down whenever I got annoyed by such. So, that's what I did. every time I got annoyed by "let me explain", I used it as opportunity to calm myself down until it became automatic to a point that I don't even notice "let me explain". every time ya see a youtube short intro - OP, use it as opportunity to do 2 minutes breathing exercise instead. over time, it becomes automatic and you'll point blank stop noticing them

just remember that watching short form videos literally makes you ret@rded, the second you find yourself doing it turn it off and train yourself like that.
