I've tried looking for a 'blacklist customer' app on the app store, but it seems most of the blacklisting apps are more related to fraudulent transactions like chargebacks and cash on delivery. Interested in hearing how rental and hire businesses on Shopify are tracking 'bad customers' that aren't returning items on time, damaging them, stealing them, etc. Is there an app you've downloaded from the store? Alternatively, if there isn't, then how are you tracking these bad customers if they can change their personal details (or at least change a part of their personal details so it's not obvious at first glance)?

If you can't code it, you can tag customers and use flow to hold orders?

That's the way to do it. Add a tag, and Shopify flow can flag those orders or even automatically cancel. Simple and easy.
This sounds perfect - I'll look into it. When tagging, can you add other information like context as to why they got tagged (e.g. damaged item, returned late, stolen, etc)? Or is it just a simple 'blacklist' tag for example. Also, will the tag figure out if the 'bad customer' is using masked details? e.g. they changed their name but using the same email address, or they changed their name and email address but using the same postal address?

I believe Boomgate can block at checkout based on customer tag, you might have to require login to checkout though which is a hassle. If it's purely for this one thing then it's free for a single rule (i.e. block x customer tag)
I would do this. Add a 'blacklisted' tag on this customers. Then create a flow that if the tag is present, cancel the transaction. You can also add a flow, that won't capture payments if the tag is present. That way you don't get charged credit card charges.
Good point, tags and flow can handle a lot more and i'd probably start there before paying for another app
We don't use a dedicated blacklist app. We add internal notes to customer profiles and manually review repeat renters before approving bookings. To be honest, if someone is determined to come back with a different email and phone number, a blacklist won't stop them anyway. The bigger win has been having deposits, ID verification, and a manual review process for higher-risk orders. That's caught far more problems than any blacklist ever would.
Yes, flow will do it. Work great, sends us an email when problem customers order.
