Looking for any suggestions on the best way to achieve this. I recently looked at the new Catalog and Companies features, but it didn't seem to work in the way I was envisioning. We have a segment of customers we want to be able to tag (VIP) and give them access to a discounted price list on all of our products. That price list, however, is not simple with each SKU pre-calculated and in a table (no global 20% off). These customers are all individuals, so adding them to a "Company" looked like a pain where I would be setting up a unique Company + User for every one of them. Currently thinking of doing a Variant Metafield for the custom price, and using an App Function to handle the discount at Checkout. Then we setup the customer, tag them, and they get the discounted pricing displayed on the website. Am I overthinking it or is there an app already built doing this well?

Yeah those features are on my Advanced plan now. My problem is that they are end-users, rather than B2B companies, so I would have to setup hundreds of companies each with a single person in them. Wanted to avoid that, if possible.
yah I can see that pain. I am trying to picturizing it naively, may be with the combination of metafield+theme extension+shopify function for cart and checkout side modification could achieve this.
I was considering having Claude do it. Perhaps a small app in the Shopify Admin, which handles the functions, discounting, and grabs the price from a Postgres DB? Then I'd have the flexibility for a couple different tiers if I needed to based on the tag.
That’s what I’d do but I use railway as I have several custom apps (for niche issues like you’re going through) and I find it easy to manage them.

Hi there, Moj from the Discounty team here. You've hit the usual wall: Catalogs and Companies are built for B2B, they assume a company account with contacts attached, so they don't map to individual VIP shoppers. For individuals, customer tags are the cleaner route. The way I'd set it up: use Discounty's Advanced Discount Code campaign to create a discount code that's restricted to your VIP customer segment, then share that code with those customers. When they apply it, it gives your VIP deal, say 20% off all products, or off the order total, whichever you want, and only your tagged VIPs can redeem it. One thing to flag upfront: customer-segment targeting is on our Essential plan and up, not the entry tiers. You can see how it works at discounty.ai
Thanks for the great reply! I ended up making an app through Gadget so I had an admin area to manage multiple tag / discount levels. Only issue I ran into was needing a Plus store to deploy Custom Apps, so had to go through the motions of making it a public app and just not selling it.

You can do something similar in shopify plus as a b2b native feature but not exactly with the tag. But still I am sharing the idea what I know. Catalogs: You can create specific Catalogs (which have replaced the older "Price Lists" feature) that contain custom pricing, percentage discounts, or volume pricing. Customer Assignment: You assign these Catalogs to specific B2B companies or locations. When a customer from that company logs into your storefront, Shopify will automatically swap out the default retail prices for their specific negotiated rates.
Could you set up one company called VIP and assign them all to the one company ( not actually tried this but it sounds plausible)
I would do this in Claude, and build an app that allows customers to be assigned automatically displayed discounts. You then tag the customers and they get to see the pricing.
