How do you capture recommendations before they disappear?
I always keep losing track of stuff people recommend. A colleague tells me about a restaurant, a friend sends me an album, I spot a book I want to read, and a week later I’ve got nothing. It’s all buried in phone notes, screenshots and DMs I never scroll back…
I always keep losing track of stuff people recommend. A colleague tells me about a restaurant, a friend sends me an album, I spot a book I want to read, and a week later I’ve got nothing. It’s all buried in phone notes, screenshots and DMs I never scroll back through, I always loose track of most of it or waist time looking for it everywhere. Films and music are the two exceptions because I actually put them in Letterboxd and Spotify. Everything else has nowhere to go(or to many) so it just slips away. How do you deal with this? Do you have something that actually holds up across all of it, or is it the same mess for you too? And does it bother you, or deep down do you just let most of it go and you’re totally fine with that?

This is where people recommend having one 'capture tool' and a weekly review. So it doesn't matter so much what the capture tool is, say pick 'notes' on your phone, or use screenshots. Then as you get the message with the recommendation or read the page you add it to the notes. Then schedule a reminder (for me it's Tues nights) to spend 15-20 mins going through the capture tool: look through your notes or your screenshot folder. The goal then is to put them somewhere else: film & music you already have; restaurants/holiday destinations > flag as 'want to go' on Google maps; books > goodreads or storygraph if you don't want an Amazon-owned site. An alternative is if you use a task management tool, like Todoist or Trello, create lists there of restaurants to try/ books to read and keep those lists in a Reference folder. Maybe if you already have that setup, you can use that as the capture tool straight away, or just go through your screenshots once a week and transfer the stuff you want to keep to the task management tool.
