Is there a compilation or list of privacy focused and local only programs to replace windows default features?
Since MS has started to turn everything into an always online, cloud based, data stealing, ai shitheap I've been wanting to replace basic functions like photo viewing and music playing among other things with local programs that don't scrape or send anything…
Since MS has started to turn everything into an always online, cloud based, data stealing, ai shitheap I've been wanting to replace basic functions like photo viewing and music playing among other things with local programs that don't scrape or send anything at all off my local device(s) without my consent and wont ask every time they're used to pretty please let us have your social security number and fingerprints so we can train our AI to be you. But I don't know how to verify that the programs I might get to replace those core features aren't just as bad or worse. It would be really cool if there was some trustworthy group with a little more knowledge that had already done the research.

What are default features for you?
Everything? Web browser, image viewing, music playing, video watching, document making, math doing, drug dealing... wait. I use Firefox, gimp, vlc and others but picking and choosing other programs is increasingly annoying. Like, is imageglass good for my purposes? Idk, how do I check.

Yeah, if I didn't play any games that had linux unfriendly anticheat that would have happened about a year and a half ago.
Web browser You're good with Firefox image viewing Digikam to manage an image library, you can self host Immich to get off Google photos. music playing There's loads. Clementine, foobar2000 notable. video watching Just a player? VLC or mpv. Or host your own jellyfin server to stream video to your TV. document making Libre office, open office All of those have windows versions.
If its opensource that's all you need to know.

Have to throw the obligatory Everything search tool (by Void Tools) into the mix. I just learned about it roughly 3 months ago. Makes Microsoft's search tool look like a kids toy. Seriously.
