NocoDB has started to monetize their previously amazing software. With every update lore features sliding behind the paywall and mor and more greyed out features in community edition UI. So, after years of use, I am out. Now looking for an alternative Use case: existing Postgres warehouse. Need a self-hosted, spreadsheet-style UI so non-technical teammates can browse, filter and edit rows — not an app builder that wants to own the schema. What do you guys use?

I‘d love to be able to do that but I neither trust my vibe coding or Claude‘s ability enough and think this would be extremely time-consuming, expensive and unstable,
I am ok with any model. What‘s important is that creators are upfront about their plans, not mislead the community and take advantage of them.
Mathesar is another good option, especially if postgres is important.
I did use AI for translation. Is that now frowned upon?

I think they mentioned somewhere they haven’t removed any feature from the community edition. IMO the backlash is from freeloaders who doesn’t know and hasn’t even run a sustainable business

Grist is the best one. No SSO tax, in fact you'll have to setup SSO to get multiple users support, or any other limitations.

How about this: monetize your new features. Don't pull existing ones behind the wall. One is fair, the other is scummy.
This raises the question: what model would you consider fair for a selfhosted open source project? On one hand people often complain those projects are not anywhere close to their closed source counterparts, but no path for monetization is a sure way to burn out long before your project can get half as good. In practice the people contributing anything back are an absolute minority (way less than 1%), and even a successful project would rarely bring in anything close to an industry salary. And that's without having random people in here try to hang you on the SSO Wall of Shame for being too greedy, when in my own experience it would have been much simpler and financially safer to just get a job at any random company. For some reason people are fine when cash is given to youtubers for their work, but people who do open source? How dare you.

I'll mention Seatable. I used the hosted version a few years ago and it was nice. I've been meaning to self host it to see what it's like, but I haven't had time to yet.

For your exact requirement (existing Postgres, spreadsheet UI, doesn't want to own the schema), the closest fit is Directus. It attaches to your existing schema, auto-generates a table/collection view that looks and edits like a spreadsheet, has row-level permissions for non-technical users, and doesn't try to be an app-builder. Docker one-liner, MIT-ish licensed (BSL 1.1 but source-available and self-hostable free forever for typical use). Other options I've tried: Grist — excellent spreadsheet UX, but wants to import your data, not sit on top of live Postgres. Fine if you can accept periodic sync. Baserow — has been drifting toward app-builder territory like NocoDB. Their "data sources" plugin can front an external Postgres but it's read-heavy and clunky for editing. pgweb / DBeaver web edition — too technical for non-devs. Appsmith / ToolJet — both work over Postgres but they're app builders, not spreadsheets. You'd have to build the CRUD grid yourself. If you want something dumb-simple and truly spreadsheet-first, Directus is what I'd pick. The community edition is genuinely usable, not a feature-crippled version.
