I am using Freetube for some time, as it is a powerful alternative to YouTube (no adds with a lot of useful features). Now Freetube has one big flaw, which is that you cant synchronize your subscriptions across devices. With a self hosted solution, I could simply VPN into my server and watch my content like I do with Jellyfin. I did notice solutions like the Pinchflat / Tubearchivist, but these seem to be only useful for having a means of downloading (and "owning") the videos of various channels on YouTube. If I had interest in scraping channels, I would do so with MeTube. So this is not really the solution I am looking for. I also noticed PeerTube but that one seems to be useful if you want to host videos yourself as an alternative to YouTube. Maybe I also misunderstand some of these packages. A preferred solution would permit me to subscribe to channels, while not necessarily force me to download media and optimally offer some useful features on top of what YouTube is offering minus the adds.

Thanks for this recommendation. I self hosted Invidious (not a super straight forward process to setup) and I am somewhat underwhelmed. Yes its a self hosted YouTube experience, but this is already where the party stops, especially when compared to FreeTube: The interface is super meh, I see TypeType plays on another level here. Max video speed is 2x. I see TypeType is the same here. You cant (easily) create a "watch later" list (you sort of need to create a play list by (awkwardly) copy pasting links into a playlist). How is this with TypeType? I checked the public instance but for this feature I think I would need to create an account. Freetube has a (one click) button here to put something into a special watchlater list. It doesn't seem I can block individual videos / shorts or (recommended) channels on invidious. How is this with TypeType? EDIT: I just selfhosted it. It is nearly as good and in some cases even better than Freetube from a utility perspective but is lightyears ahead of Invidious: crisp interface, channel blocking, video blocking (doesnt exist on FreeTube), 2 click watch later (with Freetube its one click). The only thing really "inferior" is the 2x max watch speed instead of the 3x on Freetube or 4x on Jellyfin. Thank you once again for your suggestion.

I initially took your guidance and setup Invidious but I have to say its really only has the bare minimum of a functionality. TypeType is the way to go.

Ah good, glad it's worked out well for you! It has its own, new subreddit r/TypeType And the developer is very responsive and friendly!

TypeType it had it's v1.0.0 release yesterday and I've been using it for a while, massive improvements in that time, and I much prefer it to Invidious/Materialious that I was using previously. The dev is super responsive and friendly when posting issues on Github. It works really well, smooth, OIDC, can import YT subscriptions. Nice interface. EDIT: You can try the public instance here although I selfhost it.

I use https://github.com/iayanpahwa/noalgotube. But it's not as feature rich as FreeTube and every issue I've posted has just disappeared later (not "Closed"). I've been meaning to try FreshRSS+Youlag sometime.
