Is there a single self-hosted app that handles Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks well?

I've run Subsonic for nearly 20 years. Yes, it's out of date, but it's the best music app with the smallest footprint. 192MB of memory and two CPUs has lasted me longer than I'd like to admit. The app handles podcast subscriptions, last.fm lookups, ID3 editing, album cover downloads, and more. Select an artist and hit 'start radio' and it pulls similar artists from last.fm and makes a playlist of the songs in your library. I've been running it with ~150,000 songs and it doesn't miss a beat. About a decade ago, I imported my audiobooks into a second library and used that until I discovered audiobookshelf about a year ago. Navidrome may be the spiritual successor to subsonic, but I don't think the UI is as polished as the original. That is to say, if you don't want to run out of date software, check out Navidrome and import your audiobooks into a second library, then you can choose that from the app whenever you want a book instead of music.

For Audiobooks I highly recommend audiobookshelf.

I use Plex for music and audiobooks. It works pretty well for this, even that their focus is on music, not audiobooks. In Plexamp app on m phone it’s an extra step to switch libraries, but it’s work well. Plex used to have podcasts, but sadly the support for those has been discontinued. I am using the native podcasts app on iOS, but I’m quite unhappy with it.

Kima Hub covers music, podcasts, audiobooks, and discovery of podcasts and music. Does it do it all well? Not in my experience. I’d still give it a try! Kima uses audiobookshelf as its backend for audiobooks.

I can't promise anything, but I would like to know more about your use case. You have these audio files on a computer at home? Or there's a "feed" of podcasts and other resources, and you want an app frontend for that feed? I've been toying with the idea of audiobook support in ShowShark. I hadn't specifically considered podcast feeds before. Anyway, tell me more and maybe it's an incremental improvement I can make.

So far I just don't think any one solution has all those covered. When I started out I used Emby for all 3 just because it was my gateway drug to self hosting, but it's truthfully varying degrees of trash at each of those 3. I've since switched to pinepods for podcasts and I don't think I ever intend to go back. For music I'm still using Emby as a back-end, but I use symfonium as the client player/app. Idk if it's on iOS, but it's a paid app on Android that is easily worth the money. To my knowledge it also has the ability to have an audiobook mode after some recent updates, but I haven't tried setting that up yet. For audiobooks I just haven't been annoyed enough with the Emby setup to switch from it. It plays, it pauses, it resumes where I left off, basically all I NEED it to do. Though I keep hearing so much good about audiobookshelf I may have to give it a go sometime.

Its on my to-do list of things to build as I've been dissatisfied across these as well and the Jellyfin/Emby/Plex model really doesn't make sense for what I have in mind.

You can bind audiobooks to a text as well, and read along with it, etc. Music has a dedicated set player you can leave open while using the rest of the app, including reading if you want music while reading. It does more than just audio though, such as movies, tv, etc so might be a bit much if you purely want audio, but you can edit the sidebar to hide those sections entirely if you want. Of course not. AIO is never a winning strategy.

On Android there is Symfonium app that now supports both Audiobookshelf and services like Jellyfin, Plex and Subsonic. So you can have all in one app. Audiobookshelf integration is experimental for now, and all audiobooks and podcasts end up in the same library as music, so for now it's a mess.

IMO podcasts should be organized with news and audiobooks should be organized with books, not with music.

I've just started using Music Assistant, the companion application to Home Assistant, and it seems pretty great. Incredible power and customization, especially when you consider the interoperability. It does seem to handle Music, Podcasts, and Audiobooks, although whether it does it "well" is beyond my ability to answer, as it's the first time I've used something like that. But I'm definitely enjoying it. For context, I do have an Audiobookshelf server running, and I think that's pretty good as well.
