I'm not totally sure that this is the right subreddit for this question, so if it's not, please let me know where I should ask instead. Otherwise, hello. I'm looking for a way to designate a space on my desktop's grid that the icons won't fill when sorted or auto-arranged. While I could certainly just move icons out of the section I want to designate, I still want to keep all of my desktop icons sorted alphabetically; I'm not totally opposed to sorting them manually, but considering that I have almost 400 icons on there (take this number as given and not open to being changed as part of a solution), that would just be impractical. And rather than spend time I don't have (college exams are real, and they don't care if you're also working a 9-to-5) testing out a dozen different desktop-modifying software, I'm hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. Any help provided is greatly appreciated.

While not exactly what you’re looking for, you may want to take a look at Portals Desktop Organization. You do have to register for a license, but when prompted for payment, you can select $0. Check out the videos on YouTube first to see if it’s a good fit.
True, it doesn't seem to be exactly what I described, but at a glance, PDO seems like it should do just fine! Thanks for the recommendation :)
This isn't helping but I want to know why. Why do you have 400 desktop icons and why do you need some region to not have icons? If you don't respond I'm just going to assume it's weird shit.
