I'm a Canadian living in the US, who only has a US phone. Unfortunately I have an elderly and terminally ill family member in Canada. In addition to frequent visits, I'm now having to step in to help organize and advocate for his care. My US phone number seems to be a barrier in terms of accessing medical and social services offices. The office where he gets primary care outright blocks my phone, and other organizations where I have left messages have not responded, presumably due to it being an international number. In the US, we have Google Voice that will allow us to obtain a phone number from a particular area code - and that number can be used for sending and receiving calls and texts. Please recommend a similar service for Canada. I could buy a second SIM card or a cheap Canadian phone, but I'd prefer a virtual service that I can get set up right away, use from both the US and Canada, and can easily cancel when no longer needed. Thanks in advance!

I added a Canadian number to my VOIP subscription through Callcentric when I started working cross-border. However, I don't know whether there are any decent smartphone apps these days to work with conventional VOIP. I had lousy experience with what was available pre-pandemic, and I haven't checked since.

If you have a Canadian Google Play Store account or App Store account, you can download Fongo for free to make and receive free calls to/from Canadian numbers. Receiving texts is also free, but sending texts costs about $20 CAD per year.

Search hushed lifetime and signup via that stack social deal for $25 for a lifetime number. They are Canadian and have Canadian or us numbers. App works great.
