I recently spun up Youtarr, which has great functionality for downloading videos and playlists from YouTube without ads and sponsorship segments since it has Sponsorblock integrated. But I started wondering if there is a similar project that combines viewing videos with the download options? My thought being that I could host the container, use a reverse proxy, save it as a web app and finally have an ad free version of Youtube to watch from anywhere on my iPhone. AdGuard/Technitium/Pihole are all great but they don't remove the server side ads of YouTube. I just want to be able to watch Youtube on my phone the same way I do at home with UBO on firefox. I don't love Brave Browser for this and I haven't bent the knee yet and paid for Youtube Premium or whatever it's called now. EDIT: After going through the comments, I spun up YTZero and it seems to have everything I was looking for. Another suggestion that was made is TypeType which I have not run but appears to be very similar.

I had a lot of trouble getting YouTube videos to sort properly. I ended up giving up and finding a YouTube solution that just blocked ads
YTZero is exactly what I was hoping to find. Thanks! Other than a few channels that have disabled embedding or playing in an app which prevents them from playing in ytzero, it works perfectly.
I spun this up the other day but it doesn't really work like a native youtube player. It's good for pasting a link and playing/downloading, but not searching up any video. YTZero ended up being exactly what I was looking for.

not possibly on iphone, but yes on my desktop that's how I've done it forever I wanted to replicate that experience and that is why I made the post. YTZero ended up giving me exactly that.
I didn't want to only view downloaded videos in a client like Plex. I have pinchflat configured with Plex so I already have channels and playlists that download and add into it. I wanted something I could search for and watch YouTube videos in as an alternative to the YouTube app, mostly for mobile use. YTZero ended up being exactly what I wanted.
I'll have to check it out. Based on another comment, YTZero ended up being exactly what I was looking for.
That does fit part of what I was looking for but I also wanted to self host something so my friends and family could use it since they are not tech savvy and don't even use adblockers. I spun up YTZero and now they can use it as a YT alternative the same way they would use Youtube, but they won't get ads.

Why not treat it the same as any other video collection like TV or movies and run it through jellyfin?
I want something that doesn't just download videos and add them to my media collection. I'm specifically looking for something that would be an alternative to the Youtube app, so I can search for and watch youtube videos with the option of downloading them as well. I already run Pinchflat for playlists and channels to be added to my plex library. Another user suggested YTZero and it is exactly what I was looking for, so I spun that up.

I'm not super aware of the iphone ecosystem, but it sounds like you're looking for invidious and an ios client.

I downloaded the chrome iOS browser app because I heard that ads do not play in YouTube when on chrome iOS. It has remained true for me. I am in the USA as well. When casting or airplaying to a TV, ads come back. YMMV but, maybe give that a shot? I am signed in to the browser with my gmail account btw

I use stream harvestarr to download YouTube shows/playlists. It connects to sonarr to put them in episode format, and then stream on Jellyfin like everything else. Otherwise use Morphe or Smarttube or something.
If you just use a VPN and have it set to Albania, you get regular Youtube with zero ads. That's my easy workaround to get Youtube Premium functionality of no ads for free. I was also looking for something similar. I use Plex for all of my movies and TV shows, and what I found to be the easiest was to just use Jellyfin and have that specific app for short videos that I download. So I use Jellyfin exclusively for those so it's separate from my actual movies/tv shows. This get auto downloaded to those folders, and then it's available to watch right away. But for basic youtube stuff, i'll just watch it on Youtube with a VPN.
ShowShark (my app) is probably overkill, but that's basically what I use it for. The server is configured with all of the YouTube channels my kids are allowed to watch. They can stream them on any of their devices via the native app. Pretty straightforward, but, once again, perhaps overkill for your use case.

Do not over complicate the things. Use any Linux + Firefox with ublock origin plugin -- Enough to stop all sort of server-side advt on YouTube. No issues at all. No ads full fun without taxing anything.
